Description
This is Soda Popinski, the third most popular Soviet of the 1980's...behind Mikhail Gorbechev and Yakov Smirnoff. This notorious drunk was an opponent from the 8-bit Nintendo game Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! The bead sprite is made from both Perler and Hama beads. 22" tall and 10 1/2 inches wide; approximately 3,220 beads.
The camera flash fubar'd this pic with all those glare marks, especially on the boots. The actual figure is far better looking than this crappy pic shows it to be.
Little fact: I just realized Popinski is the only southpaw (left-handed) boxer in MTPO.

Update: An absolute master in the art of beadspriting, Zaghrenaut, is also making some sweet Punch-Out bead figures. I urge you to click here ----> <---- to check out Steven's awesome beadsprites.

What color did you use for the outline of Soda Popinski?
My apologies for asking that kind of question. I'm slightly colorblind, so it's somewhat hard to tell the outline of this awesome piece of bead art.

It's a Hama color simply named dark red.

Would the Perler color, rust(brownish red and I don't have dark red), work as the initial outline of Soda Popinski?

Honestly, I thought about building perler punch out characters, but I was turned off by their size lol...so I am glad that yours turned out so well!
Soda Popinski is epic, so naturally I love this piece!

Thank you. As you can see, I'm catching up on all the old messages I missed while my comp. was fubar'd. Sorry for taking so long to thank you.

your right hama's reddish brown would have been perfect, but if ya gotta move on... move on, he looks great regardless...

Thank you for thinking so. After I finish every opponent, maybe I'll have the time/money to redo Popinski with his correct glove colors. Then I could just sell this one to recoup bead costs or give it to one of my brothers as a gift, or something.
Thank you for faving this, it means a lot coming for one of the proverbial big fish in the beadsprite pond.

"proverbial big fish" wow... you're making me blush... thanks... It takes guts to attempt a big sprite, and when I was starting (and still I guess) I called anything over six boards a "masterpiece" because it would probably be worthy of framing... now it seems like I've inspired other people to outstep the smaller sprites and try something bigger... You just gotta be careful when Ironing, the big ones behave diffeently than the small guys...
But thanks again, and thanks for watching me... It means alot coming from the guy who did the 3D scenes and now does the Punchout sprites... a medium fish... ^^

Yeah, he's the only boxer without white eyes. I guess that was the way Nintendo chose to make him look bleary-eyed drunk.

Yeah, the gloves are a little too dark, they should be more of a burnt orange shade. I ordered some "reddish-brown" Hama beads that would have matched perfectly, but the USPS lost the shipment. All in all, it still turned out okay looking; thanks for looking/liking!

Yeah, I finally said screw it and just went ahead & ironed him with the gloves' colors the way they were, so I could just move on with things.
The shipment of beads that I was waiting well over a week for (which had a more accurate, lighter shade for his gloves) never arrived, even though the USPS tracking page somehow showed it as being delivered on Saturday the 2nd. I just got tired of sitting idle, without the use of my pegboards.
I'll be doing Bald Bull next. I'm just mulling over which pose to make, him uppercutting or his basic stance. Thanks for thinking Popinski turned out okay.

Ah, yeah. I get sick of waiting and improvise with my stuff, too.
Too bad they didn't show up, too...
I'd say the upper-cut pose would be neat - his expression is just so ridiculous!
