Ever since Mario 3 added different 3rd-stage power-ups I have had no need for fire flowers. I'll take a close-range melee attack that can hit stuff and break bricks from the side and especially the ability to fall slowly over just boring fireballs any day! I suppose the fire flower is overall more iconic, but I tend to forget it even exists these days. Leaf or feather forever!
The lack of power-ups for falling slowly and hitting bricks from the side, incidentally, is another reason the NSMB games kinda suck.

I agree that the Super Leaf and Cape Feather are great powerups, but I usually enjoy using the Fire Flower more. It can lay waste to enemies from a distance and better yet, in most games you get coins for doing so. Notable mention to how it's also the most fun way to beat Bowser's sorry ass in SMB.
One of the NSMB games' biggest shortcomings is indeed the fact the powerups are all either from the original SMB or completely new. I realize it may be the purpose of the series even, but it's not justified because frankly the selection could be increased to span some SMB3 and SMW greats.

It's true the fire flower gives you unrivaled range, but few Mario game enemies have ranged attacks in the first place. So, being able to take them out from far away is rarely significantly tactically advantageous. Occasionally it helps a lot, like that one stage in World 7 of Mario 3 with lots of pipes with gaps between them and fireball-spitting piranha plants, but that's the exception. And getting coins is nice, but if you're hitting enemies from afar it's easy for the coins to get away. And even then, all coins get you is extra lives, and I'd say that overall, you'd save more lives from the improved maneuverability of falling slowly with the cape or tail than you'd gain from fireball kill coins. Not to mention less likelihood of falling in pits, dying, and restarting with no power-ups. Yes, I take this FAR TOO SERIOUSLY.
As for power-ups in NSMB games specifically, I don't really care so much about whether they're new or old for the sake of Mario game history on principle, I just really, really like having a slower fall speed power-up because I've always had an aversion to instant deaths in all games ever. Falling slower means more reaction time and less chance of falling and restarting. I don't care about getting the cape or tail back in particular, just as long as they put in something for slow falling and to a lesser extent sideways attacks. I couldn't care less about flying over the whole level, I never did that anyway.

Awesome sprites, great usage of the color limitations.

These item powerups look far too awesome for the NES. I really like how these came out; simplistic and yet stylish.
