Description Deviation titles don't allow the & character...

It's the ever-popular, completely overrated Mario & Luigi style...with a twist. I set my goal to create a set of higher resolution sprites than those seen in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and after some discussion with someone who knows the style far better than I do, (you should totally check his gallery for his fine pixelwork and crafts), I decided to finally drop 'em off here. As should go without saying, even though some characters such as Peach and Bowser may look similar to their BiS counterparts, they're actually much larger and have been completely drawn from scratch as always though I did use references where possible.

I'll have to start watermarking any and all sprite sets that could potentially be useful to anyone besides myself. Especially anything in M&L-style since those are extremely commonly stolen.

I know this is not the first time I've tried this style but it's BY FAR better than my last foray.

Yeah it looks bad, but it's also super old. I made a better version a few years back, it's on the second row here: i.imgur.com/wL6nkzu.png

The sprites are pretty nice, but I have an issue with the whole watermarking thing.

1) With something small and detailed like a sprite sheet, a watermark obscures the image too much. These things look better in clear view.

2) What's wrong with something you make being "potentially useful"? Why does it matter if someone uses your sprites for a project? It's not like you're making any money off of these sprites, nor do you own the characters. Sprite sheets should be free to use for anyone, because that's the entire point.

3) I doubt these would be 'stolen', watermark or no. They look great, but without animations, nobody will be able to use them in a movie or game. Which again renders the watermark as nothing but a needless distraction.

Just my thoughts. Good job on the sprites.

1) That is obviously true, but it also makes it easy for anyone to just snag your work with the press of a button.

2) People have vastly different opinions on this. Some are fine with their work being posted elsewhere, modified or otherwise. Some are not. All too often though, people on deviantART submit deviations that contain sprites made by other people or ones taken from games, without obtaining proper permission first. It's in the site's copyright policy ( [link] ) that the content you submit must be fully created by you or that you have permission for the content used that isn't. Unfortunately many people never even read the copyright policy/are too dumb to care and submit stolen content anyway. If anyone (inside or outside of this site) wants to use anything made by me, they can ask politely, it's not really that difficult. If something is free to use then I'll mark it as such in the description, by default nothing is.

I'm genuinely curious, why do you think all sprite sheets should be free for anyone to use? Because they're easy to steal anyway? Or because sprites are not a "real art form" like paintings or photographs?

3) If I want to see my work used in someone else's movie or game, I'll give them permission if they so desire (I really appreciate it when people bother to ask first). Most of my work is not watermarked so when something is, one can clearly see I don't want it to be used for anything. On a few occasions I've had my sprites lacking a watermark being stolen, even if it was a single sprite.

Is it really unreasonable for someone to watermark something they spent hours drawing?

Spritanium In reply to Neslug [2012-01-07 18:15:21 +0000 UTC]

I definitely think sprites are a real art form. I'm a spriter myself; that's where the "sprite" in my username comes from.

I guess I just see it a little differently. I'm not making any money off of sprites that I make, so I really have no problem with people using them. I'd prefer credit, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if somebody used my non-copyrighted sprites without permission. All I know is that I definitely wouldn't put a watermark over anything I wasn't selling, because the way I see it, it just cheapens the art. It's the same thing as saving a sprite sheet as a jpg, or drawing a fantastic wallpaper and uploading it with a 640x480 resolution. Sure, these are things I might do if I was expecting payment for the full, uncompressed product, but as long as I'm giving something away for free, I might as well give the WHOLE thing away.

I hear ya, if Print Screen didn't exist and deviantART completely blocked the saving of an image if the uploader so desired, this wouldn't be watermarked. In the end, even though I am not making profit off any of this, it just boils down to me hating to see my non-free use work spread around without being able to do anything about it. I've made some public sprite sheets in the past but I won't be submitting them here on deviantART anymore.

It's a real character named Dark Bowser, who is an even more evil clone of Bowser in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story for the DS. I would link to the Mariowiki article on him but it's currently down.

Speaking of Mario and Luigi style sprites, have you ever noticed that some of them in the actual games have odd-colored greenish pixels just outside the outlines? What's up with that? Between that and how some parts seem abnormally smooth by sprite standards, whereas others have the familiar level of pixelization, I wonder how much they're purely hand-placed pixels.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Snivy101 In reply to WridianGrey [2011-07-11 23:23:34 +0000 UTC]

First off, they're grey pixels on the outside, and it happens because that's what Nintendo wanted to do with them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WridianGrey In reply to Snivy101 [2011-08-04 11:02:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but it makes them look weird against other colors, so why put them there on purpose? Sprites from other Nintendo games like say, Yoshi's Island don't have grey outside pixels.

Yoahi's island is a Mario and Luigi game, and that's your opinion. Some people like em, some don't.

WridianGrey In reply to Snivy101 [2011-08-06 09:40:31 +0000 UTC]

If you like the outer grey pixels, that's fine, it's nothing personal. And mostly I think the sprites are great, I just wonder why put the grey pixels there. Yeah, they can if they want, it's their call and all, but why? There's nothing else about the Mario and Luigi look (which to be clear, I definitely like,) that makes their sprites somehow need grey pixels on the outside unlike pretty much every other black outlined sprites ever.

Now seeing them all done - purely awesome. Very smooth and all in-style.
Though I do agree with Koopaul in that many of them have parts that are either out of proportion or are oddly shaped.

They do look higher quality than the Bowser's Inside Story ones, which are ALREADY amazingly done. So you pretty much just took it up to the next level.
