Description Because I got ill working on the tutorial, I produced a couple of these process sheets of how I draw wings. This is a duck's wing, which is also called a high speed. Birds with these types of wings generally have great speed and agility in the air, but not great take off. I'll be posting the ventral side soon after, if anyone would like other wing types in this kind of process let me know and I'll draw them ^w^

These are the same wings that Caio has in case anyone is curious xD He is incredibly fast but he can't stay in the air very long as he exhausts quite quickly. Very manoeuvrable though, does flips and everything!

Check out some of my other stuff!

You know the logic of how you draw them actually seems to make a lot of sense, very interesting. Explains how they look so lifelike, you have the bestest wings ;3Β

Haha thank you xD And I try to be realistic in concerns with my wings, they mean a lot to me!

Thank you for showing your process! I'm actually a bit surprised! So for your first step are you contouring the wing, finding the shapes or something else? If I were to do that I would have tried to draw the form or started out rough, but you seem to go in like kim jung gi and pick out that "perfect line." Β Its probably not possible to answer it with text but I'm really impressed with how you can show form with only line weight and placement. Even with tons of practice under my belt I still struggle with what you did so naturally here.Β

Haha it's no problem xD The first step is covering the basic silhouette of the wing. I cheated a little because the drawing of the previous wing process steps showed through on the other side, so I drew the silhouette from it (which also makes it more coherent within the set tbh). I don't really need to start out rough with many things anymore, especially wings! I've drawn them so much in my life that I know them better than the back of my hand. Not to mention this particular position of the wing wasn't exactly challenging, it's a front on view of the underside, it was pretty easy so I could just go straight in with lineart. I've been drawing in pen a very long time too, so I most often 'sketch' my lineart straight in xD

ok, I can see how you got the contour here in particular, I'm just so impressed on how you know exactly where to put the line weight. I've drawn in just straight pen for a while as well, but I can never get that perfect line you get and I've drawn some things at least hundreds of times and I still can't make that silhouette as clean you have here no matter the number of iterations. But to be honest, I think any part of the wing is challenging! I used to draw chickens when I had them and I could never get them right, even in resting position.Β

Oh actually I was wrong, this was the first one I did so I didn't trace over my own drawing xDΒ

I don't know I've always held strength in lineart, it's what I specialise in. Even my messiest sketches always have the cleanest of lines xD I'm not sure what to say other than that it may just be your skills reside more in other areas o:Β

They can be quite challenging in certain angles, especially for when it comes to highly foreshortened angles

Oh, then I guess I don't know how you do it. XD

yeah, thats always been my curse and fear, what I want to do is completely out of my ability and the only thing I can do, is art I have no interest in, make no money, but was told to do it because it would help me. XD I can't tell if its a problem with me or lack of knowledge. I feel like a chef who only wanted to make a burger but after years of training can only make a salad lol.Β

Just making convincing foreshortened lines are hard enough!

Just habit I suppose, always done a lot of lineart without a sketch or structure, a wing isn't difficult because it's a series of easy and simple shapes just put together in layers. If you don't take interest in your own art then it's a good reason as to why you don't seem to be improving.Β

Just making a simple simple shape look good is really difficult I've found, if its more complex, even if theirs little errors the fact that its complicated kind of excuses it, but if theirs the tiniest of errors in a simple shape like a box, its instantly visible which is why I struggle greatly with them.Β

Although I do really enjoy the process of making the thing (when I'm in the proper mindset.) be it a still life, figure or character I like I never make anything I'm actually proud of. ESPECIALLY when I see the work of my peers and come on DA, it shakes the little confidence I had right off. I kind of feel like a superhero who has no control of their powers as well, some days I'll make an ok drawing with no refs and it'll be just how I imagined it and other days I'll warm up for hours and still come out with shaky lines and stiff poses, even with photos.

It's just a matter of time. You've declined every way of practice and study I've offered so honestly I think the best bet is just to continue the way you are, try your best and time will give you the improvement you seek. Don't be harsh on yourself, and always be open to feedback.Β

And if you're not happy with art, take a break. If you don't like something about it, then don't be afraid to change and adapt your way of working. Always have references and always work from imagination. And I don't want to sound harsh but you're gonna have to get over that perfectionist and self loathing attitude because it's just gonna get worse xD Learn to love your art and it will love you back. Even just standing in front of a mirror everyday saying "I'm a good artist!" will boost your confidence honestly.Β
