Nestly: It has been a while, hasn't it old buddy?Sparkalar: Hey, don't call me old! I've still got plenty of pep left!
Nestly: That's because you're immortal..
Sparkalar: Oh right.
Nestly: So. I'm sure those shy watchers of mine out there have been craving something like this. My old character Sparkalar, in my old style. (improved, of course)
It doesn't matter how much time goes by, people still remember me most for my darn Neopet characters. So I decided to pay a little tribute and draw as many of my old neos as I could fish out. I miss them. ;~;
So, enjoy! Sparkalar for some reason looks like he's about to shell out a kamayamaya for some reason here.

Oh, wow... seeing Sparkalar again, and quad in your old style no less... so nostalgic and wonderful. <33 I really miss old Neopets, the way it is now is lacking so much of the atmosphere it used to have- nice to be reminded of then. ^^

You always did have the most awesome characters Nestly. I've always been jealous of that. You're so creative!~♥
Anyway, he looks really cute in your old revamped style. He looks so clean and vibrant now and oh my gosh, the shading is amazing. You're getting so good. =3

Nestly: Thanks Centch. :3 I was hoping you'd notice the shading, because I made sure to do my best on the cell-shading. I haven't done it in a while but I really felt confident with this piece. ^^
And haha, thanks. He was always SO hard to draw consistently in his anthro form though, and I never did feel like I got it right. One day maybe I'll draw that form too again.

I think the reason I can't let go of him is because he was my first love--so to speak. I found you on Neopets first, when I was a younger (Four, five years ago?) and naive child. I followed you hear, but I never forgot him; he was and is such a charming character.
I'm sorry, but I can't help but ask: Have you shelved this dear soul, or do you continue to grace him, just not here, on Deviantart? I know I feel terrible when I realize I've gone months at a time without even thinking about one of my characters.
D'aaaw, Sparkalar, you inspired me and gave me the courage to pursue my own path in art, and for that, I'll never forget you.

And aww, I'm glad my art inspired you so much. I think it was all the stories behind these guys and the art that went along with it that people liked so much. I wish I could go back and do something like that again. Good ol' Neo.
Unfortunately it does feel like he's been shelved. Actually, most of my characters in general have sort of been forgotten. Mostly because I don't really get around to roleplay like I used to.
Just a part of being older and having a life.. working.. blahbiddy blah. You know. Excuses.
But I will try to do a little something for the old-school Sparky fans out there. :3

Have you ever considered small, short stories? If you don't think it's in you to continue on a large scale, you can always take baby steps. Also, it was really just your own drive and excitement that inspired me. I've found other artists I admire, but so many seemed to get disillusioned with both life and their art. You always seemed happy just drawing though, and thats the way I want to be.
Also, I totally get the lack of time factor. I haven't role-played in a long time either--though, I've gotten to some small time role-playing passing a notebook back and forth between me and my friend. That's on hold for now though--she's trying to make the deadline for her audition on an OCT. What I try to do is draw them and talk about them when I feel like one of my characters has been neglected, since I no longer have time to spend hours in a role play on a computer. It's not much, but I feel like I'm keeping them alive, at least just a little.
Also, as much as I appreciate the thought, I kinda feel like your art should first and foremost be for yourself--I feel like art is supposed to be a piece of you, and that it loses that the more you do it to please others rather than yourself.

Nestly: Aw man, I have, many times. I love writing stories, but I'm always kidding myself when I dive into writing something I wanna turn a book out of. Maybe I should just write some short, cute chapters like I used to for Sparkalar. They were so simple and lame, but people liked em'.
And like you said, I just did that stuff because it was fun for me. Then I got too into my art and everything got complicated and overwhelming. I'm not like I used to be, just drawing fast and for fun. Now I'm one of those discouraged artists that can never finish anything and always feels inadequite compared to her peers. ...But I'm trying to break out of that and just draw again.
Anyways, haha. Yes, I used to 'notebook' roleplay ALL the time in highschool. xD Me and my friend ~ticticai would find ways to pass each other in the hall between classes just so we could pass the notebook to each other to respond. Oh man.. good times.
And yeah, I'm with ya on that, I'm just personally not very self motivating. I always need to be inspired by some person in my life... or just something inspiring in general.

What people liked was your writing skills, and the charming ways you revealed Sparkalar. If it makes you happy, why not do a little, no matter how small?
As far as feeling inadequate compared to your peers, well you're not the first nor the last to hit that. I'll look at certain artists my age and think, "Wow, why can't I create something so beautiful?" I try to turn that into a "Wow, they're that young and already that amazing? Imagine what I'll be capable of if I just keep trying!" It gets hard sometimes, but I have to keep reminding myself that I can take up a pencil and I paper too. With art, you're your own limit.
Haha, I don't know what I like better about my notebook role-plays; the writing, or the little pictures we draw at the end of each reply.
Yeah, I usually need to listen to a song or look at someone else's awesome work before I feel ready to take on doing any work that requires a lot of effort. I think something you should remind about yourself is that so many people--maybe even thousands--have been inspired by you, you Nestly, just because you are who you are.
