Description Finally!

Here you go, the Dreamcatcher Tutorial - learn how to make a dreamcatcher, Netherwings-style!

Here is Chapter 2, with description for how to decorate your dreamcatcher with beads and feathers

I hope you like it, I worked hard! And even more I hope that you will give it a try! Making dreamcatchers is my greatest passion, and I hope that this tutorial will inspire more people to try and, hopefully, love this craft

Now, I just want to make one thing clear.
It has come to my attention in my internet-lurking for dreamcatchers to stare longingly look at, that many people who make these with one thing in mind: to make them as authentically as possible. That means no glue, no metal rings, no fake leather and so on. I absolutely respect this, but I have a different view.

I use metal rings because they are easier to get hold of here, and because it would take a lot to break it.
I use glue because I want my leather to stay on, my nets to hold and my feathers not to fly away. I do not feel like a sellout for that, it is just the way I do it.
I use fake leather because I don't like using the real thing for several reasons (though I did in the beginning, as I didn't know about Skai leather), and because it's easier to get hold of.
I hope others will respect my opinion on this, as I respect theirs

Another thing that laid very heavily on my heart while I was considering selling my dreamcatchers online, is that dreamcatchers originally are a Native American, Ojibwe, tradition. The internet told me that many real descendants of Native Americans are saddened by the fact that cheap dreamcatchers are mass produced and sold by people who claim to be the real thing.
This is not what I do.
Making dreamcatchers is a craft that I fully devote myself to, and each and every one I make is filled with a lot of dedication and love. I have developed my own way of making them, and I sincerely hope that I offend no one by doing this.

..and that's that.
If you decide to give dreamcatcher-making a try, please link your result in the comments and I will feature it!

Please enjoy the tutorial, full view or download and all that jazz, I hope you will like it!

Love,
Vilde

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE "flipp it over" part explains everything!!! i love u i love u i love u!!!!!

here is how my first one came out: angelic-painter.deviantart.com…

also I did NOT have the tools though so, for the 2 big circles i found some metal scraps and curved them into a circle (even maneged to get some cuts) and for the 3 small ones i found some bracelets (I don't wear bracelets, nor any other jewlery) then i found some black shoe-laces and wrapped the metal circles around, then i found some strings, made the nets went for a run and found the feathers (duck, crow, and seagull) connected them to the rings and.........TADA!!! i am so happy!!! If it weren't for u....i would have been stuck forever!

AMELIEwolf43 [2011-07-17 01:11:52 +0000 UTC]

are the materials generally pretty expensive?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

netherwings In reply to AMELIEwolf43 [2011-07-19 17:55:22 +0000 UTC]

That would depend where you go shopping of course, but all together I don't think it is very expensive because say if you buy a bag of beads, you only use some of them and can use the rest for other projects, same with leather, feathers and other things. So if you use those things anyway it's well worth the purchase, in my opinion

I live in Aussie, do you have any idea where I could get the metal rings or the fake leather? Of course I'll look in my local craft shop, but I may have to go into the city to find everything./
Great tutorial by the way, the best one I've read!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

netherwings In reply to tay-designs [2011-06-09 18:42:55 +0000 UTC]

I get mine from www.panduro.com, if they do not ship to your country you can always make them from strong metal wire (or wood), I've done that a few times when I need rings of other sizes than I can buy I hope your craft shop has them, though!

Thank you very much, I am happy that you like it! Please show me if you make your own dreamcatcher ^___^

Ah, good old Panduro. I didn't even have to read the text to recognize where those rings and bead box came from; I've certainly bought enough of the damn things myself. Personally I prefer this stuff for wrapping the frames, as it's already cut thin.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

netherwings In reply to ChimeraDragonfang [2011-01-31 23:08:43 +0000 UTC]

Panduro does have some neat stuff! Ah, yes, I used that on my first dreamcatchers, but I was never quite satisfied with how it turned out. Since it's so thin it leaves very visible stripes. But that's just my opinion, of course.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChimeraDragonfang In reply to netherwings [2011-01-31 23:30:28 +0000 UTC]

I've never had a problem with the stripyness, and kind of like the texture. I pull it really tight (to the point I've had almost-rope-burn on my fingers after finishing the wrapping job) so it all sits pretty snug. To each their own though. I've also used that rattail cord stuff because it came in the bright colours I wanted. The thin stuff is fine; the thicker stuff is useable but not that great compared to the fake suede cord.

Well, to put it this way, when I look back on my first ones now, I have a little laugh at myself. Just keep trying!

Hmm, what is the problem with it? Maybe your glue isn't strong enough.
