Description Here you go, the Dreamcatcher Tutorial - learn how to make a dreamcatcher, Netherwings-style!

Chapter 1, explaining how to make the ring and net:

I hope you like it, I worked hard! And even more I hope that you will give it a try! Making dreamcatchers is my greatest passion, and I hope that this tutorial will inspire more people to try and, hopefully, love this craft

Now, I just want to make one thing clear.
It has come to my attention in my internet-lurking for dreamcatchers to stare longingly look at, that many people who make these with one thing in mind: to make them as authentically as possible. That means no glue, no metal rings, no fake leather and so on. I absolutely respect this, but I have a different view.

I use metal rings because they are easier to get hold of here, and because it would take a lot to break it.
I use glue because I want my leather to stay on, my nets to hold and my feathers not to fly away. I do not feel like a sellout for that, it is just the way I do it.
I use fake leather because I don't like using the real thing for several reasons (though I did in the beginning, as I didn't know about Skai leather), and because it's easier to get hold of.
I hope others will respect my opinion on this, as I respect theirs

Another thing that laid very heavily on my heart while I was considering selling my dreamcatchers online, is that dreamcatchers originally are a Native American, Ojibwe, tradition. The internet told me that many real descendants of Native Americans are saddened by the fact that cheap dreamcatchers are mass produced and sold by people who claim to be the real thing.
This is not what I do.
Making dreamcatchers is a craft that I fully devote myself to, and each and every one I make is filled with a lot of dedication and love. I have developed my own way of making them, and I sincerely hope that I offend no one by doing this.

..and that's that.
If you decide to give dreamcatcher-making a try, please link your result in the comments and I will feature it!

Please enjoy the tutorial, full view or download and all that jazz, I hope you will like it!

Love,
Vilde

I really want to make one now! Yours came out so beautiful! Where can you find leather and the rings?

netherwings In reply to JRollendz [2012-05-19 23:56:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I am happy to hear that! I get the rings from www.pandurohobby.com, but I guess you can get something like them at your typical crafts store. If not, you can get 2mm thick aluminum wire (at least that's what I've previously used, but I am sure you can use other sturdy wires) and make your own rings! The Skai leather I also found at a crafts store, but if you are unsure of where to get leather you can probably go ask you local shoemaker That's what I did!
Good luck finding the supplies then, and please show me when you have finished your very own dreamcatcher! I would love to see it ^__^

This is so cool! I respect traditional dreamcatcher makers, too, but these things are so pretty, how can you not try to make one from what you have? I made a few pendant sized dreamcatchers with no leather, real or fake and no feathers and I love them! I'll have to try the flip, I didn't have any instructions the first time. Thank you!

Thank you! Glad to hear it, and i totally agree! The flip is great, it really helps you get the middle of the web, well, in the middle. Dreamcatcher pendants are wonderful indeed, and so much fun to make!
Thanks for stopping by, I hope my little tutorial was of use

i REALLY want to try this now!!! where do you get the rings, and is there something else I could use for them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

netherwings In reply to ArcticWolfSpirit [2011-05-21 23:35:34 +0000 UTC]

Yay! Glad to hear it! I get my rings from Panduro: [link] [link] and [link] , but you can also make your own from strong metal wire (I do that if I want a different size from those three) or use any wooden or plastic ring you find. I prefer the metal ones because they are heavy and very durable - it would take a lot to break them and they don't wilt like wood might.

I hope you find some you can use, and please show me your finished dreamcatcher!

I think your dream catchers are adorable, I am half native american [candian XD] myself, and although there may be a few things I personally would change, I do adore your work, and applaud that you do respect this tradition the way you do and you do see it as a craft.

thank you :]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

netherwings In reply to Property-of-Gaara [2011-04-08 21:43:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! That is wonderful praise indeed, I appreciate it It is very important to me that I offend no one by making dreamcatchers the way I do, and it is a relief to hear that you like them. (Could I ask what you'd change? Just curious )

No, thank you!

Property-of-Gaara In reply to netherwings [2011-04-11 13:30:21 +0000 UTC]

teehee, personally I would put a shell turned into a bead ad the center piece, or a natural stone or even a piece of leather and do the webbing in between that piece of leather and the outer ring [if that makes sense XD] but over all yours are beautiful! :3 keep up the amazing work!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

netherwings In reply to Property-of-Gaara [2011-04-20 20:26:23 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes, I've tried that with the leather in the middle, but only once a long time ago so I'll probably be trying it again soon! I'd like to find some real leather first though, the Skai leather that I use has a white backside and isn't very pretty when both sides show. But thanks for the input, I appreciate your thoughts! And thank you for the compliments

what about the knot in the middle of the net?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

netherwings In reply to ladyMargolotta [2011-01-31 23:19:58 +0000 UTC]

Before you put the mid-bead in, you mean? Just a regular, tight knot with a dot of glue on top. Sorry for not mentioning it in the tutorial.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ladyMargolotta In reply to netherwings [2011-02-01 07:18:34 +0000 UTC]

i mean when u run out of thread (or break it) and u had to add more. im happy u had it on this dreamcatcher so i could ask. is there a trick to kinda hide it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

netherwings In reply to ladyMargolotta [2011-02-02 18:06:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh, hide the knot connecting the new thread you mean? I always try to position it (by tightening extra) so that it will be hidden under some beads or in one of the net-knots, if that makes sense. Hope that helps!
