i didn't know that you can do it with ammonia. Does it work on silver plated wires too?

No ammonia reacts only with copper. With its help you can get even the blue and light-blue patina. But not all stones can be kept in pairs ammonia. For example, natural pearls, turquoise, malachite, and I do not recommend.
Since silver is better to work with sulfuric liver.
