Description A cloud painting tutorial I originally whipped out for my art blog. [link] But people have found it useful, so I put it into a DA format.

I know experienced artists will laugh at my rudimentary attempts, but there are lots of beginning artists out there who need to know basic painting concepts.

This was made in Corel Painter, but you can use any image program, or physical paints, to get the same effect. Note that in watercolor or colored pencil, you have to work light to dark, not dark to light.

Additional note: Clouds come in lots of shapes and sizes, but an artist's challenge lies in figuring out the basic shape, then expanding on that and making it puffy. This cloud looked like a pyramid to me, but others are rectangles or circles or squares, depending on your reference.

'fat over lean' refers to the rule that successive layers of paint should use more oil in the mix - oils straight from the tube are somewhat 'fat' already, adding linseed oil makes them 'fatter', and mixing in thinner makes them 'lean'.

So your base layers would be diluted with a lot of turpentine/thinner of your choice, then gradually start adding more linseed/other oil of your choice to the medium you are using on your paints as you work on the next few layers.

good tutorial nevertheless.

Oh man! Thanks! You really see the importance of blocking in value then fine tuning the details.

"Rudimentary" ... she says. Even if they did, i sure hope they turn to compliment ur efforts to bettering your technique. I kno I wouldn't have thought of a "loose pyramid" to structure the clouds with. I'll keep this in mind when i try my hand at clouds again.

Gah, that's one more thing I should have put in there. Clouds are always some kind of basic shape--some are more rectangle, some are triangles, etc. This one just happened to look triangular to me. I'll stick that in the description.
