Week 4 of Pernille Oerum's Monday Art Challenge is another remake of sorts, this time of a photogram I made around 2002. A photogram is a "filmless" technique wherein you directly expose the photo paper, placing subjects/objects directly on the paper to create the final image. The unexposed part of the paper (the part that's in shadow) develops as white, while the exposed portion is black. Some cut-outs, a sheet of overhead transparency, and a permanent marker resulted in a dark hand that appeared to be "bleeding light" through cracks in the skin. Simple enough, but I was proud of it, and my classmates seemed impressed. My grade was another story as our TA felt photograms were "too easy to control the results" (direct quote), never mind the dozens of examples by renowned photographers shown in the lecture portions of the class.
