Description
Maya / Mental Ray / Photoshop. The neurons were modeled and rendered in Maya using Mental Ray. For the texture of the neurons I used a displacement map to create the electron microscope effect.
It was fun working on this one! I'm very interested in neuroscience and all kinds of brain stuff, so this was inspired by it

This is absolutely gorgeous! But... did you apply a canvas texture to the image? I think that takes away from the overall impression (for me). Still love it!

yeah I did. I think I went a little overboard with the texturing and it looks kinda busy. For my next neuron scene I'll make it a bit more clear.
and thanks!

Stunning, I do have one question however, was each 'neuron' created procedurally or did you model one, and kitbash?

I created around 3 different neurons and just duplicating them and placed them all over the place

A map that "displaces" the geometry in the object, very useful to use! The lumpiness in the neurons are created by the displacement map in this case. It can save you a lot of time when you don't want to model those details
