Maya / Mental Ray / Photoshop.The neurons were modeled and rendered in Maya using Mental Ray. For the texture of the neurons I used a displacement map to create the electron microscope effect.
It was fun working on this one! I'm very interested in neuroscience and all kinds of brain stuff, so this was inspired by it

Hi, I am currently doing a project about a neurodegenerative disease, Parkinson's disease. I am currently doing my product, which is a poster about the disease. I am involved in a research project dealing with the possible causes of sporatic Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and am trying to put my project up on a crowd funding site called Microryza that funds scientific research. So I was just wondering if you would be ok with me using your image as the banner picture that appears on my project page. I created this image as a desktop background... so the resolution is rather small for print.
The biggest you can print it at a decent resolution is probably 11"x17" (inches)

thanks Neutrix, I was thinking of something quiet a bit bigger. the plan is/was to print onto glass and backlight your design with lots on twinkling christmas lights behind the image. The quality is pretty good even at low res, maybe I could try to bump up the resolution artifically. Ideally I would like to get it up to 1.2 meters wide - something like that. Ill do some experiements and let you know. fecking excellent work!!
