Description An offshoot of Hemlock . I found the shape of this one interesting, as it made me think of the connections between nerves.

Made with Apophysis 7X.

This makes me think of the connection between two neurons making a connection and lightning "feelers" finding their mark. Pushing the association further, the ideas of Darwinian evolution in which species branch off the tree like lightning feelers, finding their "mark" in the form of a survivable area in the space of possibilities. Or the shape of trees themselves for that matter.

Division, variation, and selection. It seems to me that fractal processes represent the first two parts of this description of a "creative" process that seems to express itself throughout nature. The last part, "selection", though I wonder if that's the best word, is represented by the fact that only one feeler becomes the main lightning branch, and some branches of a tree may die, as may some species in the evolutionary model.

If you've never seen video of lightning feelers in ultra-slow motion, I really recommend it.

Thank you very much for the comment! I enjoyed reading your thoughts. Whilst fractals seem to be overwhelmingly present throughout nature, I hadn't specifically made a connection between fractal processes and Darwinian ideas about selection and speciation before. I can see what you mean though, I think. Also, I've watched some videos of fractal patterns being burnt into wood with an electric current, and those can be oddly fascinating.

The concept I originally had whilst making this was more psychological, I suppose. It was based on the idea that it's impossible to know exactly how another person's mind works - each person's mind is a closed system, in a sense, and whilst we can sympathise with other people's thoughts and feelings, we can't know for certain exactly how they experience them, or whether it is the same as how we experience those same feelings. Yet at the same time, there is a deep-rooted desire to reach out, to understand and be understood by other people. I found myself wondering what it would be like if a technology existed whereby we could experience the workings of another person's mind directly - bridging the gap, so to speak.

Sorry if this ended up being a bit ramble-y, in any case, and thanks again for taking the time to comment.

Don't worry, ramble-y is my native tongue. Except in this post.

Really a wonderful flame!  I love minimalist fractals and this is why.  It has such a wonderful impact!

Thanks Lea, I'm glad you think so! I've always liked minimalistic fractals too.
