Description I just had to get out and shoot somthing this morning. I headed out from home in my mothers car (see my journal for where my car is lol), and headed out to Dorset.

First I went to Corfe. Nothing. Then to Kimmeridge. Realised the sun was going to rise in the wrong place so went to see if warborough bay was open. Nope. Headed back to corfe and out to Studland.

Last time I was at studland it was uneventful. Flat boring beach. I decided to head back there anyway. This time I walked east and came across a cool turrnt, some bright green algae and some cool rocks so I took a tonne of shots.

This is the first of many!

I so wish I could get up early and go to the coast, your shots prove that its definitely worth the early start! Fantastic composition and colours.

thanks again babes You should do it Its so nice just sitting around on the beach with nothing but the sound of the waves, a few black headed gulls screeching and watching the sky change colour lol

i left the house at 2.30am in all fairness tho, the 200 miles was including the drive back and some other trips en route. I first headed to corfe castle to see if there was mist around, that took an hours driving. there wasn't so went to kimmeridge bay - then realised i'd cocked up and the sun was rising inland from there so I headed to lulworth to see if the army had opened up Tyneham village so i could get down to warborrow bay - they hadn't so i headed back to corfe in despair and then decided to give studland a shot.

last time I went there it was justa boring beach but i headed the other way around this time and found all these rocks and bunker

oh thats not too bad then, and it wasnt your petrol either!! I have no idea where those places are but it sounds like you have a nice choice of places to shoot. This might sound like a daft question but how do you know where the sun is going to rise?

Neutron2K In reply to eighty-three [2008-07-15 10:12:13 +0000 UTC]

it was my petrol, i put £30 in lol.

Ever heard the phrase, rises in the east, sets in the west? Its a good starting point but its not accurate. You can get sunrise/set compasses which are basically a piece of paper that show you were it will rise and set at different times of the year. Their location specific though. I don't have one.

Basically because i'm always in place at LEAST an hour before sunrise, you can see the colour in the sky and that tells you were the sun is coming up

Oh well not your mileage though

Yeah i know the phrase but i'm not too good with east and west, i'll have to get a compass! Oh yeah i never thought of the colour before the sunrise, im actually not as thick as i sound you know!!

i'll make sure i take mine with me, im not getting up ridiculously early only to end up in the wrong place for a sunrise!!

Neutron2K In reply to eighty-three [2008-07-15 15:35:40 +0000 UTC]

thats all part of it

Really you should scout out areas before you go for a sunrise. I tend to do it as I get there and then go back a couple more times to ensure i get amazing shots. You have a lot of disapointments doing it this way but its nice to be out and no one else around

I'll probably end up going to a lake near me first because its only about 20 mins away. There are some nice hills around there too. I'll let you know how it goes!!

Neutron2K In reply to eighty-three [2008-07-15 16:37:05 +0000 UTC]

look forward to seeing the shots Inland shots are a lot harder at sunrise though. The lights not as great as it is in coastal areas and its harded to get a decent shot because you don't have the interest of the motion you do on the sea

I'll try and get to the coast at weekend, I think the nearest place is Southport, not sure how good the coast is there though. There don't seem to be too many beaches around where I live, might have to look at a weekend away so I can go somewhere a bit more interesting!

Neutron2K In reply to eighty-three [2008-07-16 09:10:11 +0000 UTC]

yeah you have to drive to the best coastal parts. beaches are boring, you want rocky coastlines with motion in the sea west coast is the best. Let me know how you get on!

Have a look around google for some inspiration - google maps really helps. If you sign up as a fan on my website, I have a gmap setup of all my fave shooting locations Shouldn't really share that information with people but i thought sod it lol

sunrise and the following hour is the best light of the day. I drove a long way this morning (200 miles in total). I will be doing it more when I get my car back from the garage!
