What a great shot! All of your pictures are awsome!!! I wish I could afford your awsome gear, I'm stuck with my low budget equipment.

The kit doesn't make the photographer its all down to composition, light and how you use it

Besides the composition, how do you "use" the light, how does one take an awsome wildlife/animal picture? So far I just tried to get a fast shutter speed so nothing is blurred and out of focus. But what else... Could you give me some advice? (I presume this shot is out of the box and not photoshopped?)

general rule is the first/last 2 hours of daylight, (hour before and after sunrise and sunset) as after that light generally becomes way too harsh and contrasty to take nice pictures, (unless theres difussing clouds around or its overcast/your in heavy woodland).

Get out and about for the 'golden hours'. Personally I prefer dawn and sunrise light to later evening light as its cooler and highlights high up cirrus clouds in pinks rather than oranges.

Re. this shot is virtually straight from camera with a slight curves adjustment. The most I do in post production work I will do is layer blending for shots where the sun is in the frame and thus no amount of Neutral Density filtering can balance the exposure 'in camera' in a single shot.

In regards to my wildlife shot, most of it is pretty much straight from camera with exception of slight curves adjusts and ever so slight saturation corrections/boosts.

Great depth of field, were you crouched in the grass for this one?

I was low down in a ditch to the side of the field Always have to get level with the eyes. Well most of the time.

If you get above eyeleve you create a sense of insignificance in the subject. If you get lower, you emphasize the subjects size and power etc. Eyeline level creates a more intimate shot

I've never thought of it like that before! Thanks for the tip! It's also easier to hide i guess too!?
Great shot.

its easier to approach because your not as threatning. It also dramatically improves your shots getting down low.

Great pic, a very majestic subject.

There is a white spot just above the left antler, at first I thought it was dirt on my screen, but it's not. Is it an insect? One of those bloody midges. It's hardly noticeable, but now I've seen it, I'm drawn to it. Sorry.

Very nice. I like the more center position of the stag. Nice antlers it's got there. Better stay far away.

nah - they still have their velvet coat on the antlers at the moment.

Velvet coat or not, those things can still probably do some damage.
