Description The Japanese Government Railways (JGR) Class 5000 was a type of 0-4-2 tender locomotive. Two were built by Sharp, Stewart & Co. in 1871 and were numbered as 11 and 12, with both becoming the first tender engines in Japan. Due to their Whyte notation, their driving wheels wore out faster than the 2-4-0Ts also brought in from Britain (could explain why the type was unpopular for tender engines). Both locomotives were reclassed as "Class 5000" in 1909 and renumbered as "5000" and "5001", with the two used as shunting engines in their final years. In 1919, No. 5001 was withdrawn from service and scrapped while No. 5000 steamed on until retired in 1921.

Due to its importance as the first tender engine in Japan, No. 5000 was set aside for preservation and was stored at Shiodome, outside Tokyo, alongside Class 3950 2-6-2T No. 3951. Sadly, hopes were dashed when the shed it was stored in collapsed and caught fire in the 1923 Kanto Earthquake, damaging the locomotive. It was moved to Oi Works in Tokyo and stored in a dilapidated condition until finally scrapped around 1942. The numberplate from No. 5000 is now on display at The Railway Museum in Saitama, Tokyo.
