Description
The New South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR) 30 class was a design of 4-6-4T suburban tank locomotive built for service around the Sydney suburban system, replacing several older designs such as the infamously flawed F class 2-4-0T and the Q class 4-4-0T. Known as the S class originally, they were built from 1903 to 1917 by Beyer, Peacock & Co. of Manchester, England, and NSWGR's own workshops at Eveleigh in Sydney, with 145 examples by the two firms, 95 by Beyer Peacock and the remaining 50 by Eveleigh Workshops. In 1924, NSWGR changed the way locomotives were classed with the letter system ditched for the first two digits of a locomotive's number being its class, which the 145 members being renumbered as 3001-3145.During the 1920s, parts of the Sydney network were electrified which resulted in several of the class which were to valuable to scrap. As a result, 77 of the class were converted to 4-6-0 tender engines, known as the "30T class". Remaining members were allocated to branch lines which didn't require them needing conversion, where they were operational until when the class was withdrawn from service from 1957 to 1973. Out of 145 locomotives, five of the 30 class have been preserved along with seven of the converted locomotives. Currently, No. 3112 (Beyer Peacock 5807 of 1914) is currently the only member of the class operational in preservation by is currently undergoing what appears to be a mechanical overhaul in October 2022.
Versions include:
-Original S class condition (original bunker without electric headlamp)
-Electric headlamp wt extended bunker (as normally seen as 30 class)
-Air reservoirs and front steps added (as seen on No. 3013 in industrial service)
