Description
The NSWGR 30T were the tender conversion of the 30 class 4-6-4Ts. During the 1920s, the 30 class replaced by single-decker electric multiple units (EMUs) known commonly as "Red Rattlers" across several lines around Sydney. Due to the engines being too valuable to scrap it was decided to relocate them while country branch lines where tanks can't operate were in need of new motive power as their 12 and 17 class 4-4-0s were in need of replacement. In 1928, No. 3088 was converted by Clyde Engineering of Granville from a 4-6-4T to a 4-6-0 and paired with a 32 class 6-wheel tender. From 1928 to 1933, 77 of the class would be converted with the first ten by Clyde Engineering and the remainder by NSWGR Eveleigh Workshops in Redfern. They were paired with several tenders from scrapped locomotives or engines calling in for tender swaps, which resulted in several different tender combinations. Between 1940 and 1957, 28 of the class were fitted with superheating with most given riveted on "drumhead" extensions with some given new smokeboxes supported by the frames, given them a more modern and purposeful look. They were seen across the NSWGR system with them being found around Temora Griffith, Cowra, Dubbo and Narrabri West in their final days. Withdrawals began in 1958 with No. 3126 and the final one, No. 3090, being retired in 1972. Seven of the 30Ts along with five of the original tank engines have been preserved. One, No. 3001, has been restored by NSW Rail Museum at Thirlmere after spending over 20 years on static display and is scheduled for relaunch in 2023.
