A Lack of posts is a bit odd for me but my life has had some stuff to deal with, in any case here is both the SE&CR C and the S Class thrown in for good measure.

in 1898 a trial was conducted between London Chatham & Dover Railway B2 No194 and South Eastern Railway O No436, the B2 was deemed superior and an order for 40 locomotives following this design was ordered. With the first 15 ordered from Neilson, Reid & Company were delivered in June of the new Millennium, with the next 15 following coming from Sharp Steward & Company the remaining 79 examples being built at the SE&CR's works at Ashford, who constructed 70 and Longhedge who did 9 members, the last coming out of Ashford.

They found use on mainly freight but could be seen quite comfortably undertaking passenger work between Reading and the Kent Coast, as such the last 12 delivered from Ashford were equipped with steam heating, with the Southern Railway later making this class-wide.

The S Class started life as C Class No685, during the Great War, a new secret port facility of Richbourough, with a heavy shunter needed Maunsell converted the engine into a heavy shunter.

Withdrawals were reasonably late, the only engine withdrawn during SE&CR Days was 685, which had been reclassified. The first withdrawal was that of No's 1261 and 1499 in 1947. Three members lasted into Departmental service at Ashford, these being 31280, withdrawn in 1963 and scrapped, 31272 who became DS240 as a Stationary Boiler, and 31592 works Pilot, the S Class having been withdrawn, after being Pilot at Bricklayers Arm, in 1951.

31592 served as DS239 until 1966 being withdrawn and then bought for the Bluebell Railway. and is a bit of a movie star featuring in both 'The Wind on The Willows' in 1996 and 2016's 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'.
