Description During WWII, Allied prisoners of war (mostly Commonwealth which included Australians) were used as labour to construct the Thai-Burma Railway as part of the Imperial Japanese Army's (IJA) efforts in India. As part of this, the IJA also brought over several locomotives into Thailand which included 94 members of the 165 examples of the C56 class 2-6-0s built between 1935 and 1939. The locomotives selected were No. C56 1-90, 161-164 and were heavily used in both the construction and operation of the Thai-Burma Railway, better known as the "Death Railway" due to the deaths of 16,000 POWs (about 2,800 being Australian) and 90,000 civilians being used as slave labour. Following WWII, these locomotives were seized by the Thailand government and put to work on the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), where they continued service until 1982 at its latest. Of the 32 examples preserved, 13 of them are those that worked on the "Death Railway" with two (No. C56 31 and C56 44) repatriated to Japan.

In a different timeline, one of the C56s used was going to seized but typical to their habit, Australian armed forced marked the engine as a war prize and had the locomotive shipped for static display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, the nation's capital. Note the messages the servicemen put on the locomotive to make sure the Thai government realise they can't touch this engine. In real life, No. C56 23 is one of the preserved C56s (displayed with both its original number and its SRT number '719' and is on static display near the River Kwai Bridge (yes, the Bridge on the River Kwai) at Kanchanaburi.
