Description
Bonhomme Richard class USS Discovery, NCC-1731.One thing I have learned from many haters, purists and gatekeepers, they wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the USS Enterprise and the Millennium Falcon based on their knowledge and understanding of Star Trek -- rather the lack of.
One who called himself Trekfreek/Bondfreek is one of them, a self-proclaimed expert. And he hasn't even convinced me he's even seen anything related to Star Trek prior to the 2009 movie.
He says Star Trek (2009) is Star Trek in name only. Yet his reasonings are:
- Kirk is never arrogant, disproven since season 1
- Spock has no emotions, disproven since season 1
- Star Trek is never about revenge, disproven since season 1
I know, Wrath of Khan!!!
But he rewrites Wrath of Khan to fit his beliefs to where his rewrites sounded more like Abbott and Costello Go To Mars (1953) than Wrath of Khan which brings me to the conclusion he is less knowledgeable of Star Trek than George Lucas.
And let's not get into Major Grin as many have called him out, especially his video regarding, "The Trouble With Edward."
Besides, I'm seriously doubtful that the Crossfield class is the only ship class to carry the name, Discovery. Especially since other ships have bore names of previous ships.
- Enterprise (of course)
- Defiant
- Voyager
- Excelsior
- Stargazer
- Farragut
- Prometheus
- Constellation
- Intrepid
- Saratoga (doubtful the ST4 ship remained in service that long)
And a whole slew of others that I'm not going to spend hours researching to list every single one in canon.
By the way, a nice play on a line from, "The Squire of Gothos," when someone remembered that line when Discovery first started.
"Uhura, notify the discovery (Discovery) on subspace radio."
The NCC-1731 is of course the Discovery being initially NCC-1031, and NCC-1031-A in season 3. As you know, the 1031 was because former showrunner, Bryan Fuller, is a fan of Halloween -- 10/31. But since Discovery in 3189 has the registry of NCC-1031-A, it says that registry was never used after Discovery's reported destruction on, "Such Sweet Sorrow, pt2."
With ships like the Defiant (1764/74205), Saratoga (1887/31911) and Stargazer (2893/82893) having different numbers, not everyone does the Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta thing, and it's reasonable to assume it didn't start until the Enterprise-A was commissioned.
And so NCC-1731.
According to the Starfleet Technical Manual, there is an NCC-1731, but it was a replacement Constitution class, USS Valiant, that was lost by being a "casualty" from the Eminiar 7 and Vendikar on, "A Taste of Armageddon."

Though a much older ship like an Einstein or Walker class would make more sense for that Valiant.
