Rather than PHASed Energy Rectification from the TNG technical manual, phase modulated particle cannons.

The actual PHASed Energy Rectification with nadion particles probably didn't start until the Ambassador class starship with the phaser strips.

The cyclotron charges and accelerates high intensity, phase modulated particles for the phasers with each having a maximum yield of 120kT, and directs them out of the emitter banks. When Scotty said "Phasers? You got 'em. I've already got one back recharged," on, "The Doomsday Machine," that's a single, fully charged cyclotron. As you may recall, the Constellation only fired one shot at the Doomsday Machine, enough to distract it from the Enterprise.

And the Constellation used its only shot, and a 120kT shot on an area not much bigger than my fist, and it didn't even scratch the robot.

Back onto the phasers, the thermal control systems are linked to the ship's primary thermal control systems. And in the event the primary cooling systems were damaged, then the excess heat from the phasers can be put into storage batteries like sand batteries:

In order to increase their combat time. The batteries are composed of something known for its high specific heat capacity and the density to store the heat. The batteries are cooled to -250°C and should be able to handle temps as high as 1000°C.

Though it would make sense to have an external radiator, it still uses the thermal "diode" radiator to draw the heat out of the coolant to keep the phasers cool and stored in the batteries until repairs are completed.

The coolant used in the phasers, all I know is it's a pink gas and toxic at SATP, or at least asphyxiate:

Capacitors are used to handle plasma recoil to prevent damage to the ship. It's why the ship lurches when firing phasers.

The capacitors return the recoil energy to the recharging unit between the upper and lower phasers. During power down, the phasers are slowly drained and serve as the ship's power to conserve fuel. It could take a few hours, but if phasers are needed right away, less time to recharge.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, the phaser control rooms are between the upper and lower phasers. Plus I didn't include the aft phasers.
