As part of her work for the guild, she sometimes accompanies more experienced members on excursions into the woods, but with her limited expertise she is not yet allowed to join excursions deemed as 'risky'.
Personality
[Orderly | Thorough | Patient | Stubborn | Rule-Bound | Wary | Slow adjusting | Attached | Grudge-Harbouring | Curious]
Ieteade is the sort of person who enjoys order, a clearly defined plan for the future and a sense of purpose - as long as these are in place, she will work hard and with patience to reach her goal regardless of how many years it takes. It’s a particular kind of stubbornness which could be said to be a cousin of inflexibility, as Ieteade rarely considers alternatives once her mind has been settled on a course.
She is still young and aware of this, she grudgingly will, on the surface, listen to her elders when they impose their wisdom on her; but deep down this rarely ever does more than gently shake her original plan. That said, plans are always formed around set rules which she abides with a naturalness, accepting that once a rule has been made, it stands. Going against an established rule does not come easy to her. New rules, on the other hand, need to be explained for their soundness before being added to her inner guidelines.
As with rules, so with people - it takes time for her to absorb new things, and she is wary of establishing relationships with people too quickly. Once she has become attached to a person, a thing or an animal, this connection never really seems to go away. Grudges, too, once a person has crossed her, are nurtured and kept alive in her mind and her writings, and if you have once wronged her, she will never forget it. Her attachment and grudges are usually kept private, but shows itself in the form of light touches to the adored object or dagger stares to the despised when she thinks no one is looking.
The thing which brings her most out of her shell and little circles is a strong sense of curiosity, pulling at her and threatening to move her out of her spheres of orderly comfort. Interacting with other people brings out both her curiosity and her wariness, usually compelling her not to approach a person until she has observed them for a while and gotten used to their appearance or act so as to prepare her speech, sometimes never approaching them at all if this task is deemed too daunting.
History
Formation: From an early age, the child was not what her parents had expected. Ieteade did not have the easy smile of her mother, not the affectionate manner of her father - she was a quiet, serious child, who watched the surrounding world warily and cried whenever her mother handed her over to a ‘stranger’. As she grew a bit older, her preference for relatively complicated games over quick and exciting activities often kept her a bit apart from other children and made her seek the company of adults instead.. when she did not simply spend her time alone.
She did develop bonds eventually, settling her eyes on a child a few years her senior. ‘Rollo’ was clever, well-liked and daring, and once managed to trample through and destroy child Iete’s miniature farm, which sowed the seed for a lasting grudge and sense of rivalry (which might never, truly, have been detected by the older child). Her attempts at one-upping Rollo, at acquiring the same skills but better, at making others understand that she was superior, all were foiled by Rollo’s departure from the town. It was as if one day the family was there, the next day they were gone. (Unbeknownst to her, Rollo and his parents had simply moved to another region to be closer to the rest of their family.)
Ieteade dreamed that the forest had devoured them all, an impression strengthened in her mind by the lack of trace - people went on with their lives as if Rollo was never there. Forgetting and moving on was unacceptable, and she clung on to her memories fervently, becoming more solitary than before while she internally continued competing against a concept of a rival. Her best friend at this point was the cat her parents gifted her.
What made her start coming out of her solitude again was when she started showing signs of magic.
Purpose: From the moment Ieteade began showing gifts for magic, she began paying attention to those around her who mastered this art. This meant that, at family gatherings, she drifted more and more towards her mother’s family and grew fascinated with the powerful grand- and great-grandparents, many of whom were affiliated with Atlas, a guild of forest guides situated in the Iadlain capital. Joining this guild, then, came to symbolise a sense of power and independence for her - and this began a long period of studying and working to impress her great grandfather.
Her motivation was partly fuelled by admiration for her great-grandfather and those around him for advancement in magic and the work they performed for the guild, which was perhaps not the most extraordinary in nature; but something about the manner which they guided others and provided travellers means of moving through the Wispwood appealed to the part of her which, more than anything, feared the deeper parts of that forest. She was literally thinking of it as facing her fears, but another thing which made her read on about the woods and practice her magic under the limited guiding his father could provide her, was a more undefined idea of overcoming.
Persistently pursuing this goal, she finally ‘qualified’ at the age of 30, joined the guild and left her childhood home to move to her great grandfather’s house in the main city of Iadlain. Her apprenticeship since was anything but the orderly business and steady progress she had imagined. The first couple of years there were not actually much different from the ones before, despite the new location - she spent her time studying and preparing, reading about geography and fauna, summoning magic and planes, absorbing knowledge from others rather than actually being allowed on a Real Quest™. In the beginning especially, she would trail behind her great-grandfather and the few others she had become acquainted with before moving and spend a lot of time covering up in her room with a book rather than seeking out the company of others. Apprehensively, she moved to the libraries after scouting out the quietest corners, but her interactions with others outside her little circle were minor, her attempts at getting to know the new city not very far-reaching. Still, she didn’t miss her home particularly – here, she was closer to her goal, her knowledge of magic was expanding, and she dutifully reported home to her parents about her new surroundings in the language of an observer. However...
Recent events: All Atlas members - as citizens of Iadlain and neighbours of the Wispwood - were affected by the conflicts, the forest’s retaliation, the hostilities from Reluir and appearance of the headless Colossus. Often kept from directly ‘participating’, Ieteade stayed with her family and helped out where she could, more helpless than she would like to admit. How can anyone stay behind with a clean consciousness, knowing that family and friends are out searching for towers, risking their lives in the Wispwood and beyond? Her great grandfather and many others from the guild were in the most dangerous times gone from her, and the cold that stayed in the forest afterwards felt as if it was a manifestation of all the dread recent times had caused.
The now still feels uncertain. When Iete is allowed by her overprotective great-grandfather on any Atlas quests at all, it is only for gathering items on the outskirts of Wispwood, accompanied by multiple more experienced members. Most of her time is spent in libraries or in the Atlas Guild, doing chores, studying and practicing, or searching for familiar faces. She is still afraid of the woods.
Additional info
⬨ Skills: Drawing and recording, basic survival and knowledge of the Wispwood, Using magic (though still at a pretty basic level...)
⬨ Habits: Re-arranging books and objects, biting her nails, falling asleep in corners, picking up things and putting them in her pocket for later recording - meticulously recording her day/taking notes, constantly seeking eye contact with people she talks to, wearing several layers of clothes. She tends to deviate towards those she sees as wiser and more clever than herself (with a wish to absorb knowledge from them, perhaps surpass them).
⬨ Interests: The workings of magic, Life as concept, Time’s effect on things; rot, decomposition and death (with some ambivalence...)
⬨ Likes: Forests and their creatures | Improving her skills and expanding her knowledge | Reading under blankets | The smell of flowers | Feathers | Libraries | Sunny spots | Nutty flavours | Small affective gestures invisible to outsiders
⬨ Dislikes: Huge gatherings of people | Forgetting details | Being touched without granting permission | Losing face and being talked to condescendingly | Loud and overly affective displays | The cold | Feeling exposed | Rot
Relationships
⬧Family - Ieteade has a pretty big extended family; she has no siblings herself, but her mother has two brothers and due to long levity she has both living grand-, great grand- and great great grandparents. As one of her great grandfathers on her mother’s side of the family enjoys keeping in touch with those of his blood, she is particularly close with that part of the family and less so with her father’s side, whose members are generally more exclusive. Some prominent members of this group includes:
Roisin Ó Mathúna (Mother) & Dylan Wallace (Father),
(TBA) Ó Mathúna (Grandmother / Mother’s side), Feichin Ó Gríofa (Grandfather/ Mother’s side), Cinaed Ó Gríofa (Uncle / Mother’s side, older brother), Naomhán Ó Gríofa (Uncle / Mother’s side, younger brother),
Fearchar Ó Gríofa (Great grandfather / Mother’s side), Moira Ó Mórdha (Great grandmother / Mother’s side), Sechnassaich Ó Raifteirí (Great grand uncle-father/ Mother’s side),
Clíodhna Wallace (Grandmother / Father’s side), Énna Wallace (Grandfather/ Father’s side), Garbhán Wallace (Uncle / Father’s side) [etc...]
⬧Others - While some people have been part of her family for so long that they are practically family, her life in Iadlain and presence in the Atlas Guild has also brought her into the company of others, including:
Rollo (Childhood rival), Sith (‘Uncle’ / Sítheach Ó Domhnaill), Rinn (cat), Levi (Guild Member / mentored by her grandfather), Annette (Guild Member), Seastnan (Guild Member), Caldera (Guild Member)
RP Preference: HMU IF YOU ARE WILLING TO DEAL WITH AN AWKWARD BEING (both me and Iete that is...) It’d be cool to know more people from Atlas / Iadlain / everywhere!!! I’d love to HC/rp through discord or notes - I am not very good at joining chats and am easily intimidated, but I do wish to meet everyone’s OCs!
