Personality [ Patient | Emphatic | Cheerful | Romantic | Coward | Dependent | Gullible | Short-visioned ]
Brought up to be a patient person, Gustave often has to fight a little with his more erratic, easily imposed-upon nature. Not the strongest of of will, Gustave has always been a bit subdued, a bit of a pushover. He admires the bravery of strong men and women from tales and ballads, but has rarely felt the spark to perform such deeds himself and is more likely to panic and dive out of the way than take a bullet for the nearest person. This fills him with immense guilt and the more of a coward he has acted, the more willing he will be to help and try to amend the situation afterwards, not always entirely appreciated by those who were let down by him initially. It is a pretty easy task for others to rouse his curiosity and make him excited about a subject, but if it does not meet expectations or if he is let down, the disappointment will be quite profound and his reaction will usually be to withdraw a bit from people. He is, however, quick to distract from that kind of light grief, and usually it only takes the company of others to bring back his good spirits. He is usually quite good at judging other people’s mood and his own mood generally reflects the atmosphere and the people surrounding him - he is, however, always more inclined to be cheery than to be gloomy. He is not the best planner and like his moods, his visions for the future are usually short-termed and not altogether thought-through.
History
Childhood-wise, Gustave does not have much to complain about: most of his was spent in relative peace on his family’s farm in Cantor, in a pretty rural part of Ley Downs. His mother, herself an acolyte who worked part-time in the city in the city as a healer, early on suspected that he had inherited healing abilities, so when times were not busy and Gustave was not needed for helping out at the farm, she would spend time with her son and attempt to bring out his talents. However it was not her, but her cousin (once removed and otherwise known as Dunard, but known by the boys mainly as the ‘odd uncle’) who noticed the nature of the boy’s abilities as he, while visiting, burst into laughter when stumbling upon his ‘nephew’ singing to a cow. Perhaps a little too pleased to find another one of his sort in this family, he was the first one to encourage the then 6-year-old Gustave to practice his singing properly. Subsequently, each time he passed by in following years he stayed a few days longer to teach him, practicing playing an instrument; on his 8th birthday (Dunard missed the 7th), he gave Gustave the first instrument of his own. These exciting interventions did not occur as frequently as the boy could have wished for, as the troubadour always seemed to be called somewhere and then elsewhere, so mostly his childhood up till age twelve passed as years do in the country: each passing season replacing the former one and bringing the customary duties, holidays, and festivities.
One milestone which left a considerable impression on young Gustave occurred in his 12th year when he accompanied his parents to a market. Although he found the market quite exciting, the bustle and the noise and the many people from other places, he was disappointed to learn that his uncle would not be joining them as planned. The disappointment stole away some of the magic of the experience and it was a somewhat subdued boy that carried his mother’s things till he was told to ‘go enjoy himself’ and headed towards the petting zoo when something happened. A fire seemed to have caught on to the gate and a girl was being chased by a goat… which was being chased by another girl. While the second girl dealt with the goat, Gustave (in his best imitation of a knight saving a damsel in distress) brought the first girl to be treated by his mother. Soon afterwards, the other girl joined them. Up till then, he had not truly spent a lot of time socialising with his peers besides his brother, relatives and maybe a couple of close neighbours - all boys- and had spent more time with his mother or the farm animals. Pyrene and Veura, brought into his life through odd ways, became his first female and first close friends.
The two other children shared an important (for Gustave) trait with the disappointingly missing uncle; they knew far away places, and though they were both younger than him, the boy effectively felt less experienced and immensely fascinated with what stories they shared. Perhaps it was already then that he started dreaming about leaving the little corner of the Kingdom his family inhabited, or perhaps it had started even sooner with influences like his odd uncle’s tales and the ever-alluring mystery surrounding passing-through travellers. Regardless, Gustave was not his uncle, and he was not a mysterious traveller either; what he knew best was the area he was born and bred in, and when the friends inevitably drifted apart after three years, life returned to what life had been before… with less frequent visits from the people who reminded Gustave of the excitement of the outer world. Something did stay with him though, and under his mother’s supervision he continued practicing healing and was allowed to leave the farm more and help her on her duties - his path in life now seemed a little clearer, although replacing her had never been his ambition.
His uncle’s visits ceased entirely when the war broke out: this was not the first change to be noticed by the family, but one keenly felt by Gustave. A lot of things continued as they always had, because things such as harvest could not be skipped, but it felt different. There was worry, fear of the unknown, hanging in the air. Things became more real when refugees from the North began appearing in year of Paths. In year of Souls, the harvest was one of the quietest Gustave had yet experienced. Still no word from his uncle. The world continued, but now nothing felt certain anymore: his usual life felt constraining, his family’s lack of wish to interfere felt… wrong.
In Seeds 8293, coincidence paid another visit during times of tension between Delverne and Cantor: When visiting a market in search of herbs, Gustave found Pyrene and Veura in the midst of another chaos in the form of an upset herd of ungulates. The story behind the event was pierced together only afterwards the herd had been calmed and the three friends were united again. Though superstition did encourage the thought, Gustave was not sure he could rely on the gods to send him a third such chance; if anything was a sign, then this seemed to be it, and though he never would have attempted to head out on his own he now found enough courage to agree on a joint adventure between the three of them. It would be a lie to claim that he was not scared, but there was something so profoundly right about leaving the place in which he had, in his mind, become little more than a burden. Perhaps he would be able to find people who could teach him new things, who could help him improve. Perhaps he could find his uncle. The three of them settled out together with Veura leading the trio to the next town.
Additional info
⬨ Skills: Gustave’s fighting abilities are near non-existent and he doesn’t really have experience using any sort of weapon (unless you count farming tools or kitchen knives). He does play the flute and his string instrument pretty well though and is generally considered to have a pleasant voice. His work with healing and healers (mostly as an assistant to his mother) has allowed him to get familiar with the brewing of tinctures and usage of herbs from the Cantor region, but he still has some (long) way to go and will need to find a teacher if he wishes to improve his healing skills. He has a good memory for sound and learns better by being told something than through reading it (he’s not a very efficient reader), and he usually recalls people first through their voice and then through their faces.
⬨ Likes: The smell of freshly cut grass and herbs | the sound of laughter and music | all kinds of cheese | domestic animals | birds | heroic stories
⬨ Dislikes: large amounts of blood | very flourished (impossible to read) handwriting | tales of cowards | violence | snakes and other reptiles
⬨ Relationships: A family, consisting of a mother (Emem, the most important person in his life), father (Seamus), older brother (Gerrit) and a handful of uncles and aunts all from parts of Cantor, one aunt residing in Miras, and of course Odd Uncle(Dunard) whose whereabouts are unknown. His closest friends besides are the young women Veura and Pyrene , both of whom he considers dear childhood friends.
RP Preference: I’d love to HC/rp especially through skype or discord - I am not very good at remembering to join chats and am easily intimidated, but I do wish to meet everyone’s OCs!
