so here's something fun and slightly embarrassing.one day i was rummaging through the basement at my brother's house and i found this really old sketchpad that i used to draw in when i was younger. i would draw one character every couple days. one per page. i thought they were brilliant back then... well, good enough to keep anyways. not so much anymore though. holy thunder thighs batman!
for those who might have trouble figuring out who's who:
top row l to r: some gun guy (it was the early 90's, give me a break), union, grendel
bottom row l to r: spartan, hulk (and his super hairy armpits), wolverine (back in his bone claw days), magneto.
these were all done in 1994. so that means i was 13... awwww...
EDIT: YES THERE ARE LIEFELD INFLUENCES, I DON'T NEED EVERYBODY TO POINT IT OUT THANK YOU. LOL
AGAIN... i was THIRTEEN.

Seems like all of your characters spent a lot of time at the gym. I sure hope they were workout buddies and spotted each other. You don't wanna drop the bar on you throat when benching 600 lbs. as a super hero.

Joe, I drew just like that in my teens as well so dont feel ashamed. we have both surpassed that point and moved on.

LOL, Personally, I need understood the Liefeld thing, He couldn't draw feet, His heads were to small for his bodies, poorly drawn backgrounds and every picture of a character was them of frowning hard or screaming.

naw tho these are awesome. . i was just doin this the other day. . .its really funny to me to see where we were at that age art wise. . .you can see where certain things evolved from. i posted a couple of my oldies a while back . . .and yur oldies beat my oldies hehe. . see even back then i woulda thought you were the shiz.

Yeah man. For 13 they are pretty sick. Mostly b/c the anatomy in terms of head size and height is good. And also because you detailed the crap out of them.

Well, you were young, but you were talented, and of course still are. In many ways this stuff looks more advanced than the stuff I'm drawing now, and I'm pushing 30.

And I didn't even watch the damn show. I just thought the muscles looked cool. Ouch.

Stupid or not, it was the beginnings of your progress. You now have work on SF, Transformers, GIJOE... the list goes on. Whatever you started with, it has brought you here. I only hope my skills can do the same for me. Just need an "in" somewhere.

It's wierd I have boxes full of old sketches, and for a long time I admired them, and in some ways I still do, from a raw unbridaled, sketch it and forget it perspective. But now looking back, at where I have been, and where I want to go, I am starting to let go of them, in the realization that they are pieces I would rather not have represenative of my capabilities. funny thing is I am so out of practice, many of them now seem to be the works of a better artist, lol
and as for the Liefeld influence the guy is probably the best salesman in comics, too bad he was unable to deliver what he pitched ,I ran across some old con pitch a couple of years back, and it inspired me, it was his pitch on youngblood, he would be a great motivator, in that sense lol

LOL, yeah. Guy was a salesman alright. I think comics just wanted something refreshing and they saw his style... So many complaints through out the years about his art. Poor guy. But then again, the art does speak for itself. XD

hey, it's ok man, when i got 13 (7 years ago) i wanted to be Adam Warren (hes a pretty good one, im talking no ofenses here neither on him or liefeld)

good ol' image comics... most ridiculous anatomy ever... specialy liefield. though i must say it probably influenced us all back then. lol, no way around it... the image comics look was comics in the 90s... oy!
