Chapter 6: Freedom"Wake up, my Sweet." The light touch of lips against her temple woke the Throne Minister from her peaceful sleep. "You have to prevent a war." Sleepily Glinda cuddled closer to Elphaba, she was positive she could not stand another day of not waking up in her loves arm's. "C'mon, Sleepyhead, rise and shine." The Wicked Witch chuckled pressing another kiss onto her forehead.
"I'm up..." The blonde mumbled but didn't even try to sit up or anything.
"It's an important day, my love."
"Yeah, yeah, I know... Munchkinland and all..."
"Yes, that..." The green woman nodded. "But also it's time you let go of this life at the palace and come with me." This time however, the Good Witch was prepared for the request.
"Stay here with me, we will rule Oz together." She said as she sat up to see her love's confused expression.
"Glinda, I though I said that..."
"Elphaba, think of all the good we could do together. You are the one person whose judgement I trust. You always wanted to change things in Oz, for the Animals, for you... let's do it together."
"The people will never except it."
"If they won't then I won't want to govern them anymore anyhow and I'll come with you." Elphaba had nothing to oppose her determination, so she just smiled. "Well, then if you must, try your best, although you might regret it in the end..."
"I won't." Glinda gave back pulling her into an embrace before getting out of bed to dress.
"It's not how I wanted to do it though..." She said half-loud and more to herself than anything else and the Throne Minister didn't reply anything.
"I think I'll hang back a little, you do your thing about the war first and well... when you come around to it, I'll be here for whatever it worth..." Happily Glinda kissed her cheek and then walked father into the sitting room with Elphaba hanging back in the shadows.
"Your Goodness." Her advisers got up saluting her and she gestured for them to sit. Before any of them could start giving a report on the latest event, she started speaking without sitting down.
"I've come to realize that I've been rash and irrational in my decisions yesterday. There is no scenario in which the attempt to conquer Munchkinland would not result in a massive loss of life and years of fighting. Thus, I'd rather pick up negotiations with the Munchkin leaders again. I predict once we take Restwater, they will have no choice but to come to the table. With Restwater belonging to Loyal Oz, we will be able to force an agreement beneficial to all." There were several relieved sighs around the table and the Good Witch smiled a little. "Also, I'd like to apologize for my behavior yesterday. I haven't been quite... complete... and myself." The captain of her guard got up and smiled:
"Your prediction seems to be accurate. The fighting over Restwater ended in our favor late last night with the last Munchkin soldiers surrendering. We've already received word from the Munchkins that they would like to negotiate a permanent truce."
"That's great news!" The Throne Minister exclaimed gleefully and the advisors started clapping joyfully. Glinda took a deep breath as they all had settled down again. She knew this was the moment to reveal the truth for whatever it was worth, but how to begin? "There's one other thing." She said getting everyone's attention again. "You've been my senior staff for many years, some of you from the very begin when I took office and I trust and respect all of you very much. Which is why I'm so sorry to say that I haven't been entirely truthful with you in one matter very... dear... to me..." She had trouble finding her words and her advisers around the table exchanged questioning, worried glances. "What if I told you there was a different explanation to the prophecy the Clock of the Time-Dragon made? What if I told you the Wicked Witch lived?" The others started mumbling uncomfortably, not quite believing their ears but she continued: "What if I told you she has been... with me all this time, guiding me, advising me, being no less than..."
"What are you talking about, your Goodness?" The captain interrupted her fearing things would get even worse if she were allowed to continue like that.
"I want to be honest with you and show you..." She broke of as she looked for Elphaba at the back of the room but she was gone. "What..." She didn't understand, the Wicked Witch had promised her she's be there, where was she now? She could not have changed her mind?
"Your Goodness?" She paid no attention to the men in front of her anymore, she just starred at the door. Her mind snapped back to reality and she ran from the room. What had happened? Where was Elphaba? She was out of her breath as she reached her room. Distantly, she realized she was being followed which was to be expected after that exist from the sitting room. She hurried into the room and locked the door behind her before she turned around to see her love on the balcony her broom in hand.
"What happened just now?" The Good Witch exclaimed angrily and the green woman looked around. "Why did you leave me standing there like a fool?!" She hurried out onto the balcony partially afraid the Wicked Witch would fly away again if she wasn't there to stop her.
"This isn't right, Glinda." Elphaba said surprisingly calm and she took the blonde's hand holding it close against her upper body. "I don't want to rule Oz with you, I just want to leave this place behind... with you."
"But why? What do you hope of finding someplace else that you can't have right here?" She asked clearly upset but not because she was angry with her but because she just didn't understand. There was loud knocking on the door to her chambers.
"Your Goodness? Are you alright?" There were several people outside attempting to get in.
"Freedom." The Wicked Witch answered. "We'll be free from everything, bond only to each other. Please, Glinda, don't you see I don't belong here? How can you if you belong with me?" Tears came to Elphaba's eyes, actual tears that burned her skin as they fell. The Good Witch could not remember when she had last seen her cry. She brushed her tears away before they could cause lasting damage to her skin.
"Elphie..." She whispered cupping her cheek in a soothing manner.
"Glinda, don't you see? Together we're unlimited. It's time you let go so you can be with me."
Hammering on the door. They probably would break in any minute now. The green woman let go of her hand, got onto her broom and floated over the balustrade. She extended her hand to the other witch. "I love you Glinda, please come with me, it's where you belong."
The door in the back room broke open but the Good Witch didn't look back, she took off her tiara and cast it onto the balcony. She reached for her love's hand and climbed onto the broom having made her peace with the palace and the affairs of Oz. She had been the best Throne Minister she had known how, not it was time to move on. The broom gave way beneath them and they fell. Elphaba reached for Glinda's hand and said:
"I'm glad you decided to let go, Elphaba is waiting for you." The realization hit the Good Witch instantly as the Wicked Witch transformed into a mirror of herself in free fall. Elphaba had never been there to begin with. She had driven herself mad with grief and finally the part of her had won that had so desperately wanted her to take her life so she could be with her love. Her perception cleared up and the memories of what had really happened flooded her mind. She had hovered alone in her bubble over the Emerald City in the night. She had pleasured herself, she had gotten the necklace on her own. She had argued with herself over policy matters and the question of wether it was time to leave the palace, Oz, and this life behind. Her soft features curved into a gentle smile and she closed her eyes as she fell onto the palace square of the Emerald City. Elphaba was waiting for her.
END.
