OK, forgive me for a couple of things:
1. I had to photograph this by myself, so it's tilted, and therefore you can see the outside of my house behind it.
2. It's big, so the details aren't as great as they could have been.
3. I tried a new style, and I don't know if it's all that great, because halfway through it I discovered I loved looking at other folks' art in this style, but I realllly hate painting in it.

----

This is Sequana, a Celtic/Gallic goddess of the River Seine. She is a healing goddess, an earth mother, and a solar deity (hence the duck boat she stands upon--ducks are a solar image in Celtic symbolism). She's an ancient Iron Age goddess--as old as a few thousand years, in fact.

To me, she's a beautiful, loving, mothering deity, and I've known of her for quite some time. Probably not as long as she's known of me, though.

I've attempted to paint her in Russian Palekh style; the style of art that icon painters in Russia adopted to paint fairy tales and bucolic scense after Communism put a stop to anything religious.

I tried following it to a T, but it's difficult because I love. Love. LOVE layering and blending colors and shading, and it calls for almost none-- just the flesh and sometimes the clouds. Yep.

Sequana OMG! Don't think I've ever seen a picture of Her, though I've got a sketch of my own I never worked up. Nice!!

THALIA. I LOVE YOU. You're so totally one of my influences, I have to let you know!

And yeah. I love Sequana. I don't follow her anymore, due to a certain deity claiming me totally, but she's really one of my favorites, still, and so gentle.

I would LOVE to see your sketch, even in a PM.

Its absolutely gorgeous, you did well for trying some thing else and discovering that its not for you. I'd end up with an atrocious mess.

Love it, I can also see a sort of balinese/chinese.malay feel to it too.

Weird, wasn't going for that, especially since I was working directly from one artist's book! Heh.

I really adore this piece! I'm so glad you retained yourself in the shading and such. Palekh is a really gorgeous style, but you have a gorgeous style too, and the melding of the two really works. I love when such lush colors come out from complete blackness like this.

Taking pictures of work is such a pain, right? There's a program by Google called Picasa that you can download for free to do minor fixes, like straightening tilted things and such. Nothing too fancy, but it helps a hell of a lot!

I dunno if it would fix the physical tilt, though...

And thank you for the compliment.

I think you've done a great job if this is the first attempt in this style. Interesting that you should choose a Celtic Goddess to do in this style but very combination of the cultures, and I have to say that I love the duck's expression!

Well, thank you! It's the first and last attempt, really. Hahah. Everyone comments on the duck's expression, but I didn't mean to make it have one.

Love your color work in the clouds. Is it on wood?

Yeah. Everything I paint on now is wood.

Woah, I really like some things, like the clouds, the skin, and the shadows and brights. The hair and clothes are cool too, good work.

I like soft backgrounds, more white ones, with not so heavy colours. But its ok too, specially the water.

Yeah, I don't like the more solid colors, either-- it was hard to get the mix right, even though I was staring directly at the Russian Fairy Tale book. Here's an example, though I couldn't find the artist I was looking for. [link]

The water to me is a bit... I dunno. Weak, to me. Not OK... but weak. Heh.

Very interesting. The duck looks kind of evil or maybe just malicious. I've never heard of the godess but i'm intrigued by her.

Heh. Not intentional, the evil/maliciousness!

Here's the statue she's based on. [link]
