In Norse mythology, a valkyrie was a maiden (sometimes called a daughter of Odin, the main God) who would ferry the spirits of the dead from a battlefield and carry them to Valhalla, the hall of the dead. It's kind of like a spirit going to heaven, except with a viking twist to it.
