in-line 6 cylinder engines are perfectly balanced, and they hum the best! the imbalance causes vibration. the combustion process makes the pretty humming sound. of course the exhaust system really determines the qualities of the sound a car makes. with no muffling of any kind, any car would be extremely loud and obnoxious. just like a race car.

i guess the sound comes from the vibration of the explosions, because the engine does expand when the gas explodes in the cylinder. Or its just the distribution of air from the open ended cylinders that act like speakers.

ya! you pretty much got it. i suppose an animation could explain it better. [link] the combustion creates waves of air pressure (sound) that travel through the exhaust valve and out the exhaust pipes. a running motor will actually emit sound from all over (valve-train, air intake) but most of it comes out the tail pipes.
