Description
Well...I've certainly been quiet, my fellow watchers and watcherettes! Lots going on at work have kept me quite busy the last month; between my finishing up FREE MARS for printing as well as tackling long overdue commissions and other blooming projects have certainly thrown my schedule up in the air.
Also, and with so many NDAs looming over me, I can't really show much of the work I'm doing, except for those properties comletely mine. Or, in this case, mine and Dave Pauwels'.
We felt that, after working almost two years straight on Free Mars, we needed a change of air. Something lighter to tackle, albeit still in the sci-fi arena we know and love so well.
Both of us love the old pulps, such as Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers and so on... and we thought 'Why don't we do something in the style of those provocative and lurid serials?'. Thus, Captain Devin Hunter was born. Her and the loyal crew of The Valkyrie, briefly shown here.
These aren't, of course, more than studies, but we thought it'd be nice to get a bit of feedback from you even at this very early stage and see if you'd be interested n supporting the first adventure of this group of misfits.
So, whatever opinion/comment/critique you have, let us know and hit that
See you, hopefully, sooner!
Nic.-

Aaah I'm a bit late.
You had me when you mentioned Flash Gordon. I used to watch the cartoon show and loved the movie.
As for the picture, so far it strikes me as the classic type of party. That is at least the impression I get. Personally, I'd wait a bit for their characterization befire I make and further comments. Being such a classic party it's easy to fall into old tropes. Well unless you want to go straight for the classics. It's... kinda a matter of opinion
Design wise I have nothing to really nag about. The last guy kinda reminds me of Captain Future. Must be the side parting, haha.

On the matter of Flash Gordon though: Don't you miss the older, more naive take on sci-fi? Nowadays there's so much hard-sci-fi stuff. Everything looks so tech-y and has walls of texts, thought and explanations behind it. Stuff like Flash Gordon and John Carter of Mars are... well they don't bother with that. They give you a setting that's pretty much bordering fantasy and are then done with it.
I miss those times.

Loving this. Haven't posted in a while, but I have to say I love the posts of your sketches + coloured product. I enjoy trying to discover how you create the art you do, as the process is interesting to an amateur like myself. The character at the bottom bears some resemblance to myself, and so I can't help but like it! (well, minus the face tattoo that is!). Looking forwards to the project!
I do have a question for you however! I find that your style lends itself well to intense expressions, but do you feel that this limits you when conveying more subtle emotions on the face of a character? I think this relates to a comment I made way back about your style being "Hyper-Real", and wonder if emotions of less intensity aren't as amplified. I ask as I look at the smirk on the bottom character's face, and the slight difference from the sketch.
as always, I'm a big Fan, keep up the amazing work!

Everything you touch turns into "cool". Though I suppose anything with "Slaver Queen" in the title was already cool to begin with. The purple pixie girl could do a 'purple fairy girls unite' high-five with Mandrake from Mysteries of the Arcana. though depending on her actual size she may have to take it easy, since Mandrake is tiny.

Looks like a crew fit for high-action adventure punctuated by hilariously awkward hijinks. Laugh and a beatdown, once a week kinda stuff.

Story ain't a story without a story, so I really can't say.
But I'm liking the concepts, can already get some sense of character dynamics.
Certainly looks interesting. I'll stick around!

I have an absurd amount of support for this. This pulpy goodness deserves merit for thought, and I cant wait to see if you have the time on the table to execute the whole thing.

I absolutely support this idea and would love to see you and Dave run with it. I feel sort of a kindred spirit thing with guys like yourselves who like to create worlds and tell stories that take place in said worlds. I imagine you guys would want to this to stay amongst yourselves, but if you guys were to ever be so inclined I'd love to brainstorm and bounce ideas around with you.
On the downside, The Valkyrie is the name of the main characters' ship in my own Sci-fi yarn. I can already think of one other story that uses that name for the same purposes. I feel my ability to be original slipping away...
