Description
This year seems to be stripping us of many legends. This time, it's the great Christopher Lee that's left us.I remember that one of the very first characters I saw him perform was his Dracula. And something stuck with me through all the Hammer films I later watched and became especially poignant in his superb rendition of the traitor Saruman: his eyes. Those deep, black eyes seemed to conjure an indescribable fear that Sir Christopher put to very good use in his career. Coupled with his booming voice and flawless acting, he helped bring to life some of the most compelling villains in movies.
Speaking of the aforementioned fallen wizard, being the passionate fan that I am of Tolkien's work, back when I saw the LotR trilogy his character seemed to me to be the most accomplished in regards to the original material. He was also one of the few actors that had read Tolkien's work and was a huge fan too; thus bringing the very core of the book to his performance. For me, his Saruman will always be THE Saruman I'll picture reading the book and as with all great artists, his legacy will be remembered for years to come thus rendering him truly immortal.
This is a piece I'd done quite a while ago in my ocassional spare time but hadn't posted as I am always unsure about my interpretation of The Professor's work. But, having based my Saruman in Sir Lee's likeness I think it's only fitting I use this illustration as a tribute to his passing.
May you forever haunt us, Christopher!
Nic.-

He was amazingly cast over his career. To me he IS Dracula, he IS Saruman and THE voice of disc-world's DEATH.
I was designing a memorial drawing for Terry Pratchatt when I read about his death, now I am incorporating Mr Lee as well and for good measure also Leonard Nimoy, Rick Mayall andΒ Satoru Iwata. It is a rather weird grouping but I think I can make it work.

I agree! Chistopher Lee was one of thsoe gentlemen that, even though he was usually typecast as a villain, he could embody many of them to perfection without being stuck to a single one. Truly a genius, that man.

A critic named Danny Peary wrote that the genius of all of Christopher Lee's horror film roles, including "The Wicker Man," was that he is introduced to the audience as an ordinary English gentleman, but then his character is picked up and put down in the company of ghouls, goblins, or psychopathic cultists, and he doesn't look any different, but instead appears just as at home as he was before. Β That was what made Saruman such a chilling character, and what you've captured perfectly in this image.

First we lost Leonard Nimoy, Now Christopher Lee.
These are truly dark times *sighs*
At leastΒ now he is in the summerlands, I'm sure he missed his conversations with Tolkien.
A wonderful tribute Nic, it depicts him marvelously!

Thank you so very much as usual, Tina
I learned today of the passing of the great Patrick McNee as well (of Britain's 'The Avengers' TV show fame), which is another of those immortal gentlemen we never thought would go away. I guess all we have to leave behind is something that touches people and makes us live on in those around us. That's why art is so important I believe and all these people we've mentioned were amazing artists I'm sure we'll remember for many generations.

Β I hope that the late, great Sir Christopher shall Rest in Peace; I further hope that those great friends Mister Peter Cushing and Sir Christopher Lee will be as glad to see one another in the afterlife as I suspect they shall be.
Β ...
Β Some whim of mischief moves me to add "β¦ and I hope that Mr Lugosi will FINALLY be able to take a rest from playing Dracula now that a suitable substitute has arrived at the Gates of St Peter" if only to cheer up all those equally-saddened by the loss of Sir Christopher.

Sir Christopher Lee: For most people my generation he is Saruman and Dooku but for me he is The Man with the Golden Gun and Old Blind Pew. He's also the biggest unsung badass of our generation. The stuff he did before he was an actor makes Chuck Norris look like a girl scout. Legend.

As a real-life hero and classic 20th century good guy (who was a WW2 SOE operator and post-war Nazi hunter), he always brought a powerful sense of righteousness to even the darkest of villains.
For fans, the best tribute he would want would be for more people to emulate his model of modest accomplishment and quiet compassion.
