Description
Acrylics on paper - 11 x 16" (A3)Background of the painting (There are lots of different myths with subtle variances):
Ériu is the namesake of Ireland, one of the Tuatha Dé Danann (Irish gods). She had two sisters Banba and Fódla (the top left). Amergin, the Milesian bard, stands to the right, with King Mil below him.
Arriving by ship, they made a truce with the Tuatha Dé Danann to stay nine waves distance from the shore. The Tuatha Dé Danann cast a magical storm to destroy the invaders, however Amergin calmed the waves with his songs, the Milesians went to shore and defeated the Tuatha Dé Danann. When Amergin divided the land between the peoples, he set aside above the ground for the Milesians, and underground for the Tuatha Dé Danann (who entered via the Sidhe mounds).
Some of the symbols include the four mythical treasures of the Tuatha Dé Danann -
* the Spear of Lug - representing Truth (held by one of the sisters)
* Dagda's Cauldron - a cornucopia (held by Ériu)
* The Stone of Fal (Lia Fáil) - two stones of destiny (The standing stones Ériu stands between)
* Sword of light (Claíomh Solais) - (held by Amergin as he will eventually win the battle and rule well)

As long as the site is a non-profit site, the images are not altered (i.e. no text added on the image, no sparkles, no recolouring), and art is credited with my name and a link back to my main website ([link] ) that's fine Thanks for asking!

Okay, at first I thought this was fanart based off the book 'The Singing Stone' by Orla Melling, but then I read the comments and now I am not so sure. So, is it? The names are all the same as in the book, but if all that is Irish mythology, there's a chance this is a coincidence.

It's not fan art, this is my interpretation of the goddess Eriu and surrounding myths. That being said, I read Orla Melling's work when I was a teenager (many years ago ) and she was one of the reasons I became interested in Celtic mythology. It's not coincidence about the names - a number of the characters in her books are actually based on characters from ancient Irish myths (From memory Druid's Tune uses a different myth, but still has modern characters going back in time). I spent a bunch of time reading up on the different myths and legends surrounding the character, and kind of picked the bits that spoke to me

I love the inclusion of the four mythical treasures, it brings in a bit of history/folk lore. Although whether you know about the four tresures or not it's a beautiful pictue.

The image aside, what really struck me is that you're the first person I've come across on DA who actually knows her mythology/history! I get really irate when I come across drawings or paintings of Gods or other beings that the artist has no real idea of who they actually are, or why they are even. And I comment on them, and make some nod to an aspect of their character, and the artist comes back to me "I didn't know that, I just wanted to draw a pretty lady" or something like that...
Anyways.... This is done with a beautiful simplcitiy, and the colours are stunning. I love the composition of it; and the framing. It's just a completely gorgeous piece!

Thank you!
I enjoy researching mythology as much as painting them! I still pick and choose which bits interest me the most, but I figure I'm allowed to have some artistic license

I really love this one. I like how you have done the border too, and the colouring shows your skill. The main character is beautiful, I particularly like the rippling hair and the mysterious smile. Maybe a Celtic tork necklace would suit her better.

Thanks Actually the neck piece is based on the Lunula, a piece of bronze age jewellery native to Ireland used to fasten a cloak around your neck. I decided against a Torc which although is often a symbol of leadership, is believed to have been developed in Europe.
