alright, so when I go to lighten things with my foreground colour as white, am i doing this on the mask or am i doing this on the overlay/soflight layer under "tools"? because whenever i do it there, it lightens the way i want it to. whenever i do it on the mask, it either distorts it or makes things darker, which is weird.

I don't know why I can't seem to get this...when I use the brush tool to make 'spots' brighter in the mask layer, it just makes weird 'blotches' does it really make a difference if I'm using a mouse since I don't have a drawing tablet?

Its just easier using a tablet.

I cant picture myself doing this with a mouse.

Did you also change the flow and opacity of the brush?
