Description
This is a terrible picture, with terrible lighting, in a /hotel room/, and my makeup isn't done right, and my hair needs fluffing, and I should have adjusted my shoulder-sash, and a billion other things that no-one cares about, but I FINALLY FINISHED THE BREECHES, HELL YEAH.Okay, so it was... in the high 90s (Fahrenheit) to low 100s all day long, with 50% humidity, though I wasn't looking at the temperature too closely, but I was easily the most at-risk person for heat stroke at the Con, methinks. To list off my layers:
*Compression shirt - synthetic, one layer in back, two layers in front, sleeveless. Extremely necessary, as it shrinks my chest about 8 inches. Also the Only Thing I Didn't Make aside from the boots.
*18th century men's military shirt - cotton (white, thin), one layer all over, save for the shoulders, which are double-padded (three layers in all) for about ten inches over the shoulder to prevent wear-and-tear from shouldering a musket, long sleeves buttoned at the wrist, high collar, buttoned at the front of the throat
*stock - leather (black), you can't see it very well, but it's kinda like a leather collar that protected the throat (somewhat), laced in the back with leather
*late-18th century waistcoat - cotton (white), two layers (I decided not to do the pockets)
*The Coat (HRM 50th Regiment of Foot, not actually in the Revolutionary War, but the closest to what Hetalia's artist had England wearing, so that's what I went with) - linen lining (white), wool (red, 24-weight (aka 24 oz/sq. yard, the actual historical weight) (black, for the facings, collar, and cuffs) and also 'buttonhole lace' which isn't really lace as we now would think of it, and it is the white-with-red-stripe rectangular thingys that you see around the buttonholes and buttons
*18th century men's breeches - linen (white) and cotton (white, muslin, lining), and the only reason I lined it was because I couldn't find linen thick enough to be /completely/ opaque
*boots - Not At All Historical In The Slightest, and the Only Thing I Didn't Make; I got them online. I thought about going for buckle-shoes and gaiters, but in the end went with the boots. *shrugs*
The musket, nicknamed Sexy, is made from a pine 2-by-6 (liberally applied with mahogany stain), an aluminum broom handle (with gunmetal-grey acrylic paint), trigger and hammer parts that I scrounged from a toy a third of its size (also with gunmetal-grey acrylic paint), and brass plate (cut with a jeweler's saw and holed/countersunk by drill press).
Sexy got its name because I walked back into my college apartment after finishing all the work save for the brass at home, and immediately announced to my flatmates, "LOOK WHO JUST BROUGHT SEXY BACK!" And so forevermore, the musket's name is Sexy.

Do you mean the coat? Or the waistcoat? I made everything myself - as it notes in the description - but if it's the sewing patterns you want, I will gladly point you to where I found them. ^-^

It's my real hair. One of the reasons it needs fluffed is because this was the end of the day and my floofing-gel was losing its hold - I can hardly tame it into place with the glue-concotions that you would use for a wig, after all!

lol floofing-gel well you flipping awesome!!! your so lucky to be able to cosplay i asked my parents if they were ok with me cosplaying and they told me it was a waste of my money so yeah

It /is/ a waste of money, terribly so. I sunk a /lot/ into the England cosplay, and that's one of the reasons that I'm holding off on anything but the most low-budget cosplays for a while.
BUT. However useless cosplay may be, as well as a waste of money, a costume that you can take pride in is /never/ a waste of effort. It is a sacrifice, but such is negligible in the face of the outstanding feeling that you get when actually cosplaying. It's quite unlike anything else.
My advice is to introduce your parents to it slowly. Start out with a less-complex outfit, or one that can be put together for relatively cheap, and work them into the bigger projects. If they can see the boosting effect that cosplay has on your morale and self-image, then they should start warming to the idea (hopefully, XD).

Now that we established that you have a clothes-kink, this masochism of yours makes so much sense now xD
No, really, leaving jokes aside, it's wonderful. I wish I could see you in person, so I could fall on my knees and wosrhip you like you deserve - I respect your devotion, your patience, your constancy. I've been there with you (well, on MSN, but that's beside the point xP) enough nights before a con that I know how much passion you put in your work, how much you bleeded for this (litterally, I remember you complaning about sewing your fingers instead of the leather, one time xD).
Plus, I love Sexy. You told me its history many times, but I still laugh. Hard. xDDD
This said, know that you might discover this picture has been added to a dozen of Hetalia groups and that I, obviously, have nothing to do with that in the slightest. U.U
Just a thing... Change this picture. I want a better one, where also your hair is done properly! >.< It's so unfair. (Though the flip-flops in the corner are a elegant detail that cannot be renounced ;D)

Aww, come now, all this praise is going to make me blush! I really am glad you like it though, and I will certainly try to get good pictures of it! There was wasted opportunity at this Con, what with the harbour right there and all, but alas, we were running helter-skelter from one place to the next, and frankly, I was miserable outside. Sometime, I'll hopefully be able to get a skilled person with a good camera, as well as an appropriate setting to take pictures!
Sexy is awesome. This is Fact. And /you're/ the one I can blame for the sudden popularity! Why you sneaky lady. Whatever am I going to do with you?

Thank you! It's kinda my crowning-jewel cosplay, so it's great to hear that it's appreciated. And the heat was /atrocious/. I knew I was going to be overheating but I didn't realise how /badly/. I tried to stay inside as much as possible, though it was still very warm when everyone else called it chilly.

Really? Dang!
I'm lucky enough to go to Sakuracon...at the beginning of spring in Seattle. No matter what, you don't overheat XD.
I do have my share of overheating experiences though. Its been so /hot/ here that I thought I was going to pass out while bellydancing at a festival.

*laughs* I'll bet! I was in Banff in mid-June once, I imagine it was fairly similar - but yeah, the redcoat is much more of a cold-weather cosplay. This was at Otakon in Baltimore - July/August temperatures on the bay! NEVER AGAIN. As much as I love this cosplay, I /did/ come far too close to passing out from the heat when I was outside for an extended time. At least we both know we can share the pain of overheating. *brofist*

Have you considered coming out to Sakuracon? You'd be a lot less overheated in Seattle XD.

Oooo, I would /love/ to go to Seattle, especially a Seattle convention! Alas, perhaps when I get a job, for lowly interns on the east coast are /not/ paid enough to take trips to Seattle. Otakon alone was pushing it! XD

What /any/ of us would do for a boyfriend/husband like him, mm? A proper British officer and a gentleman with a bit of a wild, commandeering side? XD
Squeeing over the character aside, this /is/ my crowning-jewel cosplay, I will admit. The coat and breeches each went though about six mock-ups apiece. A long and tedious effort, but so very worth it, wouldn't you say?
