I agree with pep here pretty much, you can have a series of nearly identical characters and still have an entirely intriguing story. In fact in some cases the characters all being identical could be the entire point. Not only this but uncompelling characters can also be utilized for many purposes, such as the villain or for later development of the unlikeable character. Hating characters is just as important as liking them. The original character is in essence a tool used to tell your story. If every single one of your characters in the story is the same, this should not be regarded as bad unless unintentional. The key is knowing when and how to make similar and/or unlikeable characters work. If you're a good story teller, you can execute the story in a way that is enjoyable without having a redeemable character. In many cases the narration or the way the events are portrayed may exemplify this.
At this point I am ranting though so I will shut up yeahhh

"Characters are good characters as long as you can make them believable, compelling, and diverse."
YEP. You don't even need the diverse part.
That teenage cat girl in that big group of teenage cat girls would still be good if she invoked some kind of emotional response from her audience. And no, doesn't count as an emotional response.
Woops I mean DUURRHUR I'M NAWT A WRIDER.

I am confused by this cathat. Mostly because I think it would be uncomfortable to be a grinning British robot with a female cat on its head in the shape of a hat. Perhaps a bat? A hat made of cat would be simple as that, but a hat with a bat, no, it's no cat, is somewhat not less, but not more, than a hat.
