Oneshot is an RPG Maker 2003 Puzzle/Adventure game with unique gameplay capabilities. You, as the player, must guide Niko through a mysterious world, utilizing items, characters, and the environment to progress.
Features:

This game was made in a month with a few character designs and music tracks made beforehand. Inspirations include Yume Nikki, Link's Awakening, Hyper Light Drifter, and The Little Prince.

so yeah, the game that Mat and I have been toiling over for the past month, for the RPGmakerweb indie game contest!
I did the art and most of the music, Mat did the programming and some of the music. We worked together on dialogue/concepts.

pssst IT WAS GREAT!
We loved the interplay of in-game and out-of-game elements. The line You only have one shot, Name. REALLY caught me off guard! Especially where the game somehow knew your name. It was quite unsettling (we were playing late at night)
The art was beautiful. From character design to the atmospheric scenery to the cutscenes - even my friend who isn't a fan of pixel art loved it.
One part that was a bit frustrating was when you had to find the six digit code. My friend and I over-analyzed it and ended up looking through each file in the game folder - we found that map00051 was missing for some reason, and thought that it was the code. Didn't realize where to look until we asked for all of the hints. After that, it was easy.
The ending is definitely really bittersweet. It was a lovely game

yeah the documents puzzle is a bit tricky if you don't badger the entity for hints, maybe too tricky to be the first meta-puzzle? haha...

We just didn't think that a game could create files outside of its own folder! That was quite unexpected XD but maybe we should've been tipped off by how it uses your name...
I feel like the second puzzle (background) is a lot easier to notice, especially since windowed game is default.

i'm getting stupidly frustrated over trying to find the document with the safe code in it. i've looked through the read me and all of the files, my downloads, my desktop, my documents, my pictures.... i can't find anything.
truth be told it's making me want to cry a little because it can't be this hard to find, can it???

I know the game is called "One Shot" but I seriously wished there could be some way that I could like, you know, restart it somehow? Instead of just having it to where I'm stuck with the ending I chose. I mean it's a great game, but I want to be able to start over, and see where I can take the adventure to. I want to see the other endings, or at least see if playing the game with previous knowledge of the game might mean something. Idk; it's cool but I wish there could be a way to start over.

This game was amazing. I just found out about it by random luck today, and downloaded it immediately. Just finished it about half an hour ago, and I can say that I regret not sending Niko home, but wow! The story, the art, the music, the gameplay itself. It was all very different from what I've experienced in these RPG games before. I can honestly say it was a surprise when the "sentient machine" in the game said my name! The 4th wall breaking just made it seem all the more personal, in my opinion. I will admit that the Barrens sequence was a little tiresome, but I didn't think it took away from the game too much.
I really hope to see another game from you guys someday, especially if it's anywhere near as good as this one. I wish I could play it again and get the other ending. I'm sure there has to be a way to do it, because another commenter mentioned starting over after killing Niko? ... Oh well, whether you will reveal that secret is your choice, but either way, I will never regret downloading this game.

Such a lovely little game. I was quite surprised when the game started talking to me directly, and messing with my background. I'm gonna admit it, I got very attached to Niko. Always calling him Little One and talking to him throughout the adventure. Which made the final choice all the much harder. Niko if you can hear me I'm so sorry. I miss you.

I'm personally a sucker for rpg games and when I saw this I thought "An rpg with beautiful art and amazing music? I sure hope the story isn't bad or boring." And then... I played the game... Oh boy, where do I start... I already stated my thoughts on the music and art, so what's left is the story and gameplay. Ok, I'll be quick and say it. My god, what an amazing story that was. I am seriously touched. That last choice broke my heart 
The gameplay surprised me quite a bit. At first I thought it was going to be just a normal rpg with normal text appearing in the game like it normally happends. But then I reached the computer and HOLY MOTHER IT'S OUT OF THE GAME AND MESSING WITH MY PC... AND EVEN MORE IT KNOWS MY NAME

I personally decided to save little Niko. I sent him to death at the beginning by quitting to test the programming, so I promised I'd see him through this time. Let me just say, while I did enjoy this game, it desperately needed some trimming down. Most of my time playing was spent wandering the Barrens trying to figure out where the hell everything that was obviously needed was. Like a full hour until I found the machine to squash the bar into a crowbar. And without stumbling upon the shoes this whole time? Super obnoxious, took me out of the immersion immediately.
As for the breaking the 4th wall type programming: seriously, I'm sick of seeing this. It's trashed my desktop background, and I didn't have the image backed up. It was very sentimental to me, so I'm less than pleased, but it's what I signed up for when I realized it was one of those types of games again when I test-killed Niko. These damn things need a warning. And yes, the sentient being or whatever did attempt to put it back, but now it's a wonderful diarrhea brown color background. Great.
Anyway, great game, I won't spoil much. I did end up really enjoying the characters, and I will say that some of the programming was really interesting, I.E. what happens to Niko at the end. I'm regretting not doing some things, but I'm putting this to the side to give it another play through now that I know where to go, and now I have nothing to lose from the shenanigans of the program. Just sdlgksdfghsd super annoyed with how long that took from not finding the boots off the bat, and losing my desktop background T_T;

Yeah the barrens are a bit too big. We realized after adding the other areas but we ran out of time to trim it down unfortunately. There's a teleport option however.
Talking to the computer again after the puzzle would've reset the wallpaper, but since it's too late now, maybe try going to this path on your computer (assuming you're using windows):
