Dragon!Reader x Hunters!Nordics – (4/?)Chapter 4: Secret Found, and Story Told
You had slept quite peacefully that night. Not one nightmare haunted your dreams, and you looked forward to the next day. The chirps of the birds outside your window arroused you from your slumber. You gave a huge yawn and stretched, popping your muscles and bones in relief. You slowly opened your eyes only to be greeted by the cloth over your eyes once more. You huffed in annoyance, but you knew you had to keep it on to keep your eyes a secret.
You slowly got out of bed, the pain from your wounds much less now. By now they should almost be entirely healed, but for safety purposes you kept the bandages on. You then made your way to the bathroom and began to clean yourself up. Once you were done, you got yourself dressed, with some difficulty, thanks to Rose leaving your clothes neatly placed on your nightstand. Just after you had finished, a knock came from the door.
“Who is it?”
“Lukas.”
Your cheeks blushed slightly at his name. Why did he want to see you? Was it important or just to ask questions?
“You can come in!” you called back, making your way over to the bed.
Lukas quietly entered the room and saw you trying to head back to your bed. Your arms were outstretched, trying to feel your way around the room. Shaking his head in amusement he came over and helped you. You thanked him and sat down on the edge of the bed.
“What did you need Lukas?”
“I wanted to ask a few more questions if you didn’t mind.”
“Throw ‘em at me.”
He smiled slightly at your energetic tone, “I was wondering if your people knew anything else about the dragon. All I have heard is that it never attacked anyone. Why is that? Did your people bribe it? Enchant it maybe?”
“No, nothing of the sort. As I said before, we live with the land and respect each person’s and creature’s right to live. From what the stories say, the dragon had come from the south and took up refuge in the cave north of the village. Many of the villagers were scared of its presence while others knew to leave it be. Over the few years of living near the village, it never attack us unless the villagers attacked it first. I even heard that once it got injured and one of the villagers went to its cave. They brought it medicine and treated its wounds.”
“Really?”
“That’s what the old stories say, and that’s what we have always believe. It hasn’t done anything to harm or kill us, so why should we kill it out of fear or revenge? Just because it’s a dragon doesn’t mean that it has done anything wrong, and just because we think something is dangerous doesn’t always mean it is. Wouldn’t you attack humans if you were in it’s place to defend yourself?”
Lukas seemed to ponder a bit about this, silently staring at you while his mind worked.
“You make a good point, but I doubt you will be able to through to Matthias. Have you ever seen the dragon up close?”
“Only from a distance, but it’s scales are so magnificent and beautiful.”
To this he smirked. You and the other villagers actually intrigued him. The way you thought and the way you lived were not common in this growing world. But he had to confirm his suspiscion about you, no matter what. To him, if you really were a dragon, he needed to make sure everyone in the village was safe as well as his brother.
“I must ask, though, why does Matthias hate all dragons?”
“His parents were killed in a dragon raid, right in front of him,” he stated, no emotion in his voice.
“Oh, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know.”
“Why would someone like you be sorry for him?”
Now that caught you completely of guard.
“I don’t understand your question. What do you mean?”
Since you were unable to see him, you didn’t have time to react by the time he brought his hand up to pull away the bandage from your eyes. You gasped, but didn’t try to hide your eyes from him. You had to blink a few times to adjust your eyes. Although by the time they cleared, Lukas had a small hidden blade in his right hand, and it was pointed at you. You glanced at it then back to Lukas, but in no way did you make an aggressive move. His eyes locked on your (e/c) slitted ones, and you could see the distrust in them.
You both stared each other down for who knows how long. It had felt like everything had stopped moving, that time stood still. However, during this time your eyes held no anger, hatred, or even annoyance. They were soft, concerned, and tender. This seemed to throw Lukas off, but he still didn’t back down.
“Aren’t you going to attack me?” he asked cautiously, not taking his eyes off your (e/c) ones.
“Why would I?”
“You’re a dragon.”
You scoffed at that statement, “So just because I’m a dragon I have to attack you? Wow, has nothing I’ve been telling you registered in your head? Not all dragons attack people, for one. And two, for the safety of this village I wont hurt you. I also have no real desire to hurt you, or the others.”
“That’s a little hard to believe coming from a dragon.”
“Can you please stop calling me ‘dragon?’ I have a name you know. I thought we had become friends, or just because of me being a dragon that’s not true anymore?”
“You lied to us.”
“I lied because I knew if I just went up to you and said, ‘Hi, my name’s (Name), and I’m a dragon,’ the first thing you would do, especially Matthias, would be to try and kill me. But I will say this, not everything I said was a lie,” you stated in a sarcastic tone, then serious at the last sentence.
To this he made no comment. He didn’t move the blade away until a few minutes passed. You let out a sigh of relief and sunk back into the bed. All you wanted was to get some more sleep, but you knew you had to explain things to him.
“How is everything you told us not a lie?” he asked, and though his tone was still monotone, you could faintly pick up curiosity behind it.
“The story of how the villagers met the dragon is true. I never bothered them once, except in defense when they attacked me first, and the time I got hurt, they came to me and treated my wounds. Over the next few years, I practiced my magic a little bit and was able to transform into the person you see before you. Ever since then I have protected this village, and its people. You can even ask Rose, but I’ll have to tell her you know what I am.”
For the first time, ever probably, Lukas’ eyes widened in shock. You were a dragon, yet you protected humans? Such a thing was unheard of. How was he supposed to explain this to the others? Matthias probably wouldn’t listen to him, and everyone else would think him crazy.
“So, what will you do now?” you asked, breaking his train of thought.
“I honestly don’t know, but I must ask; why didn’t you try to get revenge? After we attacked you.”
“Oh, believe me I will get revenge, but nothing extreme I promise, haha. I’m not mean like you believe other dragons to be. If anything I’ll grab each of you, fly up high in the sky, and let you drop a few hundred feet before I caught you again. No killing involved,” you said matter-of-factly.
Lukas cringed at that idea, but shook his head in amusement.
“I’d like to see Matthias’ face if you did that,” he chuckled.
“Haha, so back to the subject at hand, is there anything you want to know? I’ll answer truthfully, I promise.”
“Does everyone in the village know what you are?”
“Yup.”
“They don’t fear you?”
“Nope.”
“This really is a strange place.”
“You could say that, but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
You both continued to chat like that for about an hour or so until the opening and closing of a door sounded down the hall. Quick footsteps made there way to your room only to stop at the doorway. Rose just stood there looking to you, who didn’t have the bandage over your eyes, then to Lukas, who was just sitting there. She narrowed her eyes and went for her dagger, but you cut her off.
“Don’t! He knows Rose,” you stated firmly.
She hesitated for a moment, but then she walked over to you, but not once did she remove her hand from where her dagger lay hidden. When she got to you she began to inspect you for any new injuries.
“He didn’t hurt you did he?” she asked concerned.
“No, though he was suspicious at first.”
She then turned to Lukas, still slightly glaring at him as if to warn him. He held up his hands, trying to get her to believe he meant no harm. She believed his gesture, but only a little.
“Now that you know her secret, you aren’t going to hurt her are you?” Rose asked, but you could detect worry in her voice.
“I won’t, but I can’t make any promises for my companions once they find out. They each have their own reasons for going after dragons.”
She just nodded and took that as a good enough answer. She then sat in the other chair and sunk down into it in relief.
“I swear, I’m going to have a heart attack one of these days worrying over you,” she teased and tossled your hair.
“I hope not. I don’t want to lose anyone here anytime soon.”
“Thanks, girl. By the way, you’re lucky it was me who came into the house and not Hans. He would have cut you down the moment he saw her without the bandage,” she scolded Lukas.
“He’s overprotective of her isn’t he?” he snickered slightly.
“He is, and I’m not joking, he wont hesitate to protect her. From anything or anyone. To him, (Name) is like the older sister he never had. I dread to think what would become of him if she left us.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” he went silent for a moment, “I must say this is a bit hard to take in. A dragon living in harmony with humans? Still a bit hard to believe.”
“Well the proof is staring you right in the eye,” you stated with a laugh.
“…I know this is a strange request, but is there any chance we could have one of your scales?”
You frowned, sat up, and leaned over to smack him lightly on the head. He recoiled a bit and held his head with one hand. He wasn’t expecting that either. Today seemed chock full of surprises.
“I’ll take that as a no then,” annoyance in his voice.
“For a dragon hunter, you don’t know too much do you? A dragon’s scales can heal themselves as long as they are still attached to us, but they never grow back once they are removed.”
“I did not know that, and for that I apologize.”
“You’re forgiven. Just don’t ask again please. Also, as a favor to me, please don’t tell your companions about me. I don’t want them to know just yet,” eyes pleading.
It took him a moment to answer, but he turned his head to the side and said, “I won’t.”
“Thank you. It means more than you think. I want to get to know them before I reveal my secret to them. Honestly that was my hope for all of you, but you figured it out a lot quicker than I had hoped. Although, I must ask, do you at least trust me a little bit?”
“Not fully. Only enough to not kill you right now. I don't know if you are truly trying to trick me then pick me off later, or actually telling the truth.”
You scoffed at that. You were going to speak more, but the noise of the door opening once again alarmed you. Luckily, Rose was quick enough to get the bandage, and put it over your eyes a spilt second before the person walked in.
“There you are,” Emil’s voice said in relief, “We’ve been looking everywhere for you. Matthias wants you to go with him to scout around the village.”
“Tell him I said no. Tino and Berwald are in no shape to take the dragon on again. He’s rushing into things as per usual.”
“You know he’s not going to like that answer, and just go off on his own right?”
“He won’t take the dragon on without me there. He’s smart enough to know that. Now, go back and tell him I said no, lille bror.”
“How many times have I told you not to call me that? And fine I’m out of here. Bye, (Name)!” Saying the last part a bit more cheerfully.
“Bye, Emil,” you laughed and waved.
You all stayed silent as his footsteps receeded out the door. Once you heard the door close, you reached up and moved the bandage above your eyes.
“Well that was a close one,” you stated nervously.
“Too close,” Rose agreed.
“…Hey, Lukas. Would it be alright if I asked you about why you and your brother became hunters? You don’t have to if it’s not something you want to talk about.”
He sat back a little more in his chair and breathed out a hallow sigh. He stayed that way for a few minutes, probably contemplating if it was ok to tell you. You couldn't blame him really. Finding out that someone you knew wasn't fully human, but the thing you were here to kill. After a few moments, he sighed and placed his hands on his lap.
"Alright, I'll tell you."
-------Flashback (Lukas' POV)-----------
(Small warning: There's one part that might be graphic, but very small. Didn't think it needed a warning, but if it does let me know.)
It was just a normal day, like any other. The sky was clear, everyone was working, and the fields were almost ready for harvest. We had never had trouble with dragons like the other villages had, but they did occassionally steal our livestock. My brother was 8 years old and I was 11 when the fateful day came.
I had gone into the nearby forest to study the area, and interact with the wildlife. Our parents let me, since I knew how to defend myself. Although, my brother would often sneak out to follow me. (Italic for narative)
"Big brother! Wait for me!" Emil had called out.
"I thought I told you to stay at home, lille bror. It's dangerous in the forest," I stated in slight annoyance.
"But mom and dad let you come out here all the time! It's no fair," he whined.
I knew I couldn't just leave him there, so I let him come with me. We only ventured a little further in because I didn't want to expose my brother to any harm. However, now that I look back on this, letting him come with me saved his life. By the time we had finished up, I could see smoke in the sky in the direction of the village.
"Big brother? What's wrong?" Emil asked worriedly from my side.
"We need to get back home. Now!" I shouted, grabbing his wrist and pulling him with me.
We sprinted all the way home as fast as we could. The orange and red haze along the horizon getting brighter the closer we got. Once we cleared the forest to the tree line, we stopped and gasped in horror. The village was a smoldering wasteland. Everything was either burning in a sea of flames, or flat rubble upon the ground. However, my eyes did not lock on all of that.
They locked onto the dragon standing in the middle of it all.
It stood there tall and proud with it's head held high. It's (common color) scales blazing and shining in the fiery flames. It took no notice of my brother and I as it roared into the sky. It shook the earth beneath it, and its cry was so piercing that we had to cover our ears. It then unfolded its mighty wings and, with one powerful beat, took to the skies. Within mere moments it had dissappeared from our view.
After we were sure it was gone, we raced over to the now dying flames of what was left of the village. We searched everywhere for someone, anyone who might still be alive. We shifted through the rubble for hours, but then found something that I would never be able to forget.
The sorched bodies of our parents.
They seemed frozen in place as it looked like they were sitting on the ground. Both were embracing each other in one last act of love before the flames had taken their lives. Both our eyes watered as saddness enveloped our very hearts. Emil fell to his knees and began balling his eyes out into his hands.
I just stood there, eyes wide in disbelief and in so much confusion I couldn't think straight. After a few long moments my hands clanched into fists, and I gritted my teeth together. Saddness was soon replaced by anger, and that anger boiled into hatred. It was on that day I swore revenge, and promised to bring down every dragon I came across.
After giving our parents a proper burial we set out to find another village. Along the way we met that stupid Dane and Tino and Berwald.
-------Flashback End (Reader's POV)-----
"We've been together ever since," Lukas concluded.
He was now facing to the side away from the two of you, hands clenched into fists upon his lap. Next to you, Rose was in tears. She had never heard of the horrible tales that dragons caused, so this was a first for her. You hoped she wouldn't see you any differently after hearing this story.
Under his bangs you quickly caught a glance at a tear sliding down his cheek. You had only known him for a couple days, but you knew this was not like him. You silently got out of the bed, ignoring the questioning look from Rose, and walked over to his side. He glanced up at you, his eyes filled in both sadness and slight hatred. You gave him a sad smile before pulling him into a loose hug.
He stiffened and froze in place. You stroked his hair soothingly as your other hand held his shoulder. You then dropped your face into his shoulder, tears of your own coming forth.
"I'm so sorry. I know I have no right to say this, but I'm sorry. That must have been so horrible for the both of you," you sobbed out.
Lukas just looked ahead with widened eyes. You were sorry for him? Even though it was your kind that took away his parents? But something in his heart told him you truly weren't like the others. Hesitantly, he brought his arms up and hugged you back, but not too hard. He seemed to care enough to remember you still had injuries. His arms were trembling slightly. You now knew his hatred ran a bit deeper than you thought, but maybe, just maybe, you could at least be there for him.
Soon enough his tears stopped falling, and he began to go back to his emotionless self. He let you go and you pulled away immediately, not wanting to make him feel awkward. He didn't make any eye contact with you. He just kept looking out the window.
"...Thank you," he murmured.
You just smiled and nodded your head. You then went back to the bed, but before you could sit back down Rose pulled you into one of her own hug.
"Rose? What the heck is this hug for?" you wheezed out.
"Why can't all dragons be caring like you? The world would a much better place," she cried.
You rubbed her back as she cried into your good shoulder. You said nothing, for no words could ever bring the correct answer. All the while Lukas kept his eyes on yours, which were sad and lonely. The normal happy person you were was now down. It was like a second paradox to him. A dragon that's kind and caring, and now a happy-go-lucky person that's somehow sad and down.
The rest of the day went on like normal; you helping as much as you could with the blindfold back on while the hunters ended up scouting around. Lukas didn't say a word to the others, but now that he knew everyone was keeping an eye on him. He did, however, tell Emil that he told you about their past. He didn't seem to mind to much, but when you hugged him as well he broke down in tears.
That night you went to bed watching the stars outside your window. Praying to a shooting star that somehow everything would be alright.
To be continued~
