Description
The first painting in the dissonance series of pieces depicting the self-destructive and counter productive nature of the pursuit of perfection. In this first painting there is a model deteriating under the pressure of becoming closer to the idealization of the feminine form. The arm representing the loss of control over actions.
The chest being the loss of emotion.
The head being the loss of the sense of self.
These elements coming together to represent the attritive nature of the pursuit of physical perfection through acts that ultimately make it impossible to achieve it.
Done on 24 x 36" canvas in oils over about a week of on and off painting for my painting class.

Very impressive picture, that instantly caused a very strong feeling of "memento mori".
You interpretation gives even more food for thought.

I love the concept and the portrayal conveyed that feeling very well I think. Also, your paint handling, composition, and color usage are very nice.

A deteriorating feeling of self and control, in the pursuit of idealizations. That makes me think there is no reason for pursuit of....ideals and that is sad, to me. I love the painting and see a richness that does not cooperate with your stated intent. I cant state that in a sentence but I can see it, the hope, confusion and the history of a persons life but those dont do your painting justice. Only the vision really communicates it well. Thank you for sharing and the technical skill, artistic esthetics are wonderful.

I see this and I think X-rays, then I feel that she may be melting away or falling apart (emotionally). Or, we all the same underneath the skin...
This piece is enjoyable, I wish I could see the art while a write this comment...
Nice work!

This is really intriguinig! even without the descriptions, I found it very expressive. I would really like to see the rest of the series.

It will take awhile for others to be ready but here is one of the sketches. [link] I am not sure if this will actually make it as a fully realized painting.

I'll bet a fashion magazine editor would look at this and go "She still needs to lose a little more weight".

Geometry is a guilty pleasure. It was a very contentious element in the painting class. Some like the balance it gave it, others thought it interrupted it.

fucking spooky.
COnceptually excellent, and beautifully executed. Nothing wrong with seeking perfection, as long as it is not in a narcissistic aesthetic sense.

Opinions will differ on this. I think its okay to have extremely high standards, its just very easy to become unhealthy about it and let it dominate your life. Anyway thankyou for the compliment!

Nice simple concept. I like the pose and how elements work in here, but I'd say you used too much thinner in here. Although I guess this is your style, but it looks like watercolors than oils.

You are not the first to bring up the water-color thing though I really did not use much thinner at all(this time..) outside of the underpainting that you can still sorta see in a few spots. I've been trying to figure out what causes this because I actually like thick looking paint though perhaps its just a natural result of working in a very conservative way to preserve my paint supply. >_> stuff is expensive y'know?

I really understand what you're saying. Oil paints cost a lot if you paint a lot. I used to preserve my paints too, using a lot of thinner, although I thought it wasn't that much. If you really think that it's not the thinners fault, than maybe your paints are bad, expired or cheap. In Lithuania we don't have a lot of choice from oil paints, but me and my colleagues use "Master Class" oil paints. There are cheaper paints in big supermarkets, I tried to buy once because I need some paints quickly, but they were really bad, something was off with binder, I don't know, so I used more thinner, but paints looked dirty at the end and very watercolorish. Anyway, good luck with your painting, you have a hand for that.
