Description
The light was blinding and that made her splitting headache even worse, than it already was. Every sound was loud like a passing train in her ears and every smell assaulted her nose like the uncomfortable scent that was so typical for hospitals... after a minute Claire Redfield realized that the smell that was tormenting her nose was indeed that of a hospital and the loud noise in her ears was the peeping of the EKG. Claire tried to pry her eyes open a second time, but the light was still as bright and blinding like before and a small, soundless groan escaped her dry and sore throat.
“Claire?” a soft voice asked from the side. “Are you with my, honey?”

Now, more detemined than before Claire opened her eyes to the blinding light and slowly but surely, the scenery came into focus. She was indeed in a hospital room. White walls, beeping machines, grey curtains and Leon Scott Kennedy in a grey plastic chair next to her bed. And Leon was the only thing in the room that looked more than just a bit worse for wear. Claire tried to open her mouth to say something, but Leon shook his head. “Not yet,” he said. “Don’t speak!” Leon rose from the chair and Claire winced when she heard the loud cracking of his joints. How long had he been sitting there? How long was she here? Why was she here?

Leon came back with a small bottle of water and a straw. “Small sips and slowly, okay?”

Claire nodded and did as she was told and the – lukewarm water – tasted like the best thing she had in years. It soothed her sore throat and with every sip it got easier to swallow. Finally she signalled Leon that she had enough and the agent put the waterbottle on the nightstand next to her.

“You look like hell, Leon,” Claire whispered.

A small, hollow laugh escaped Leon’s lips. A laugh that didn’t reach his eyes. “You haven’t seen yourself yet,” he replied and the worry in his eyes was obvious.

“What happened?” Claire asked. She remembered that she kissed Leon on the street, grabbed her bag to go into the hotel. She remembered the endless hours of debatting with the other TerraSave-members, she remembered Moira’s laughing face when she saw her at the reception, she remembered the list in the hands of Neil Fisher... and then a flood of memories rushed back into her conciousness like an endless wave of pain, fear, sorrow, remorse and disappointment. Claire’s eyes widened like those of a deer in the headlights of a car and she tried to get up. “Moira!” she rasped. “Moira! I have to... She is...”

Leon pushed Claire back into the bed and was surprised how much force he had to use to keep her down. “Easy, Claire, easy! You’re only going to hurt yourself if you move too fast!” he warned and in the same moment, he saw a flash of pain on Claire’s face and all of her movements stopped before she curled into herself. She was breathing heavy through her nose to keep the pain at bay, that had risen like a leviathan. Leon sighed. “I told you to take it easy.”

“Where am I?” Claire asked. “How did I come here?”

“A private luxus-yacht that had it’s own helicopter on board fished you out of the middle of ocean and flew you straight to the next hospital – which thankfully was one of our foreign army-bases. They contacted TerraSave and since neither Chris nor I were available, Barry flew over and organized your transport back to the states,” Leon explained.

“How long was I out?” Claire asked and her voice was on the verge of breaking.

Leon looked at her and then sat down beside her on the bed. He wiped a red strand from her forehead and his finger glided over her skin like a feather. “You had a severe head-trauma and quite a gash on the back of your head,” the agent said. “The doctors thought it would be better to put you into a coma to lower the risk of more damage to the brain.” Leon stopped for a moment, then he took Claire’s hand. “Six weeks – you were out for six weeks.”

Claire stared at Leon in shock, then tears started to well up in her eyes and despite her delicate state she threw herself at Leon, wrapped his arms around him and started to cry. Leon held her close, rubbing her back soothingly while trying to listen what she whimpered between her sobs. It broke Leon’s heart to see Claire like this. His strong, beautiful and quickwitted Claire Redfield crying in despair and sorrow. After a while Claire let go of Leon and her red eyes were glassy. Leon took her shaking hands and kissed her softly on the lips. “Claire, I know you are hurting and I know how painful it is for you to remember – but we need to know what happened at that conference six weeks ago. We tried to get as many infos as possible but since Neil Fisher vanished too, TerraSave is literally headless and we ran into dead ends everywhere when we to tried to find what had occured at that evening.” Leon pulled out his iPhone from his cargo-pants, activated the recorder and laid it onto the bed next to his girlfriend. “Tell me everything you know, don’t leave anything out – it doesn’t matter if you start crying in between, it doesn’t matter if we have to stop – just tell me what these bastards did do to you and Moira!”

A determined expression appeared on Claire’s tearstained face and Leon saw a spark of the old Claire Redfield in her blue eyes. “I’ll tell you everything – and after that... god have mercy if there are more of those people – because I won’t!”
