Description this is probably too revolutionary, in terms of "oh shit, where are the 'd' and 'A' letters?!".
But I think i should be giving this a try.

Explanations:
* The asterisk represents dA members.
since all members are marked with a '*' - there's no other community uses this sign as a trademark for it's members - it belongs only to dA. Also, it might bring more
members to relate with the logo.

* Takes less space than any other concept.
Since the designated place for the logo is very, very small, I thought would be only appropriate for a logo that's recognizable and small in terms of size.

* Simple to recognize, easy to relate to.

* Follows similar popular communities in terms of branding style
Communities such as Facebook,
Digg, Youtube and others - They have only typeface, not a
logo, but still they are the biggest e-communities
in the world (besides dA).

* Problem & solution: deviantWear
I know dA has it's deviantWear, so a logo next to a typeface can be useful and probably better.
But, you also have the fella which fits just for that, right? Also, an asterisk is very fashionable, check out [link] .

* No d and A letters, why?
So what if deviantART is referred to as dA. I think it revolutionary not to place dA next to the typeface.
liquisoft, you used the word
'Familiar' about 20 times in your article. Why? I think a great community like dA needs something fresh to bring it alongside other great communities in terms of identity.

I'm all for "reinvent the wheel" you objected, and these where my reasons.

Everyone has it's own way of relating to dA. a heart, a devil, a crown, but eventually, the easiest to relate to is the core, the name, and nothing else.

That's it, and good luck to everyone in the contest.

Right cuz you are not subscribed...

Avalik In reply to Nikeos [2008-10-09 19:24:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, so basically you are saying only subscribers are a part of deviantART.

Trust me many many people will be pissed off if that was chosen.

It is a nice design, but it's basically a big elitist fuck you to the non-subbers.

yeah, a logo designed only for the subscribed ones... the chosen ones... not me and several hundreds of other people ):
the idea sucks, but the design is really good.

The concept is nice, but i guess it won't choosen because the asterisk is already known for asterisk.org .

nope i checked that, they own the name "asterisk", but they cannot own the sign. celio.com uses it and it's ok...
Thanks for the comment

Theres a stipulation in the contst guidlines about it having to include both the letters D and A.

However, if it was a no-rules, yours would win hands-down

Hey man, liking the concept, i think it's absolutely well drawn and the logotype is perfect.

I'm not too sure about how people would react to this logo, though. Asterisks in dA are the signs of the subscribers, what about those without subscribers, for sure they are part of the community as well.

There is no doubt that the asterisk is a very strong symbol - but do you think that it would be too strong that it would take away from the meaning of the logo? I mean, there are already preconceived notions of what they mean.

Anyway, not trying to bash or anything, this entry is actually one of the better entries I've seen - I just wanna see what you think about my comment

At first glance I thought 'Ooh, that looks good.'
Clicked the thumb and was like 'OMG WTF YO DAWG I HEARD YOU LIKE 'DA' SO I TOOK 'DA' OUT OF YA LOGO AND ADDED AN ASTERISK.'
But then I was like 'hmm, actually, it's great'.
And then I read your description.
Then I posted this.
Then I looked into the future and found this: [link]

I really like it, man. And well-justified.

Interesting, although I i thought that ~ would be more common as a symbol heh. The * does look very swish.

Like you've said, you'll be making all the initial-lovers explode across the site with this one

The symbol approach could be a very interesting path to go down, the *, = and ` could all look good i think...

obviously if you'll see in my description i gave that link already.
but, the asterisk is a letter not a trademark and is placed on the other side of that celio's logo.

It's bold, it's simple, it's attractive.

However, it seems kind of common, and there's quite a high chance that another website may be using the asterisk as their logo...

But forget all that. It looks great. :'D

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nikeos In reply to Lyioh [2008-10-07 04:54:38 +0000 UTC]

yeah but the asterisk is a letter, it's a global sign, right?
What you're saying is like some website named "Tadadoo" will come to you and say "sorry we use the 'T' letter in our logo, you can't use that"...
Right?
Thanks for the comments mate

adrenn [2008-10-07 00:54:14 +0000 UTC]

The asterik work as an isotype too like dA.
So this is an isologotype, isnt a logotype like facebook.
If you want a logotype remove the asterik.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nikeos In reply to adrenn [2008-10-07 01:01:38 +0000 UTC]

yeah it works alone too, so deviantART can put asterisks in the pre-loaded deviations, and other places without the whole thing.

Maverick18x [2008-10-06 23:41:06 +0000 UTC]

It's a strong concept. If I entered the contest I would forgo the "dA" completely. I've never liked initials for a logo because they don't add any value to a brand. If you're going to use a monogram you might as well just use strong type. Anyway, I love the concept and think it's pretty well implemented.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nikeos In reply to Maverick18x [2008-10-06 23:50:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks bro!
I'm afraid it might be too "new" to the initials-lovers across dA.. hope not
