I love this peice, not only because its beautifuly composed but also for the fact a male model was used (self shot?) All to often males are left out of the picture, along with bulimia Anorexia is seen as "The rich girls" disorder, wich is very far from the truth. This leads to many people going under the carpet and not reciving help as their family and freinds would never expect it from them. In my 3 years of treatment I only ever met one male yet in my suffering and skeeking support online I have met to many to count, hopefully as your image gains notoriety more people will become aware that this illness also affects males.
3 things I love about the compostion of this image:
1: The anonymity.
2: The face; again bringing me back to the anonymity. You canot see the face of the subject but still you can feel so much emotion.
3: The desperation the hands show to remove flesh from their body.
I also love the lighting and the style you have shot this in, cold and dark, I dont think it would have had the same impact if youd of shot this in your normal style, so very good dessison.
Again very pleasing image and the message is very clear. I love it! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/l/l⦠" width="26" height="17" alt="

Wow. I really appreciate that critique, especially the part where you talked about "my style" made me happy. I wanted to have this in an extremely different style and I'm glad someone even noticed.

For me i am slightly disturbed that this piece made it to the daily deviations and why anyone would want to see the severities of anorexia and a part of me feels it is promoting eating disorders however i read through the comments and took a look into greater detail and realised this piece is NOT promoting anorexia it is warning others about it so there for it is a strong piece with a strong message lots of people suffer with eating disorders all over the world and the message of this piece gives out just how serious the illness can get well done.

I saw this, and I cringed. I'm pretty sure that this hits home with a lot of people... I know that many boys and girls are impacted not only by images in the media, but expectations from themselves to be as skinny as a picture of the cover of Vogue magazine. It certainly is more than a handful of people that have this disorder, and this really makes me feel for them. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="
" title="
(Blank Stare)"/> The horrors of someone not being satisfied with their body type or weight is portrayed in this picture, and I can only imagine what the model thinks. The name really hits the nail on the head for this picture as well... I personally think that this is well done and that this issue need more awareness to the severity of this eating disorder.... a great homage...

No problem at all! I was just going to comment, but when I saw only critiques were accepted, I decided to go ahead and do one. It wasn't hard to come up with 100 words on your piece.

Sooo

This image creates such an impact on the viewer. The way the hands are positioned on the body in its gripping manner, like it is trying to pull the flesh off. I'm sure many can relate to this concept - the feeling one gets when they are unhappy with their body. The black and white tones go perfectly with this mood and the contrast between the background and the subject just makes it all the more intense. It would not have been more profound had the face been included. The face being cropped off just brings the viewer to focus on the main subject. This is a wonderful piece executed brilliantly, not to mention, really thought-provoking and emotion-stirring. Well done!

I love the intensity here. The play of light and shadow. The anger and the frustration is apparent. As I look at your work it reminds me of my frustration with my body. I think at times I want to grip my self in this manner. I don't think the impact would be as illustrative if this image was done in colour. The use of gray scale here was very appropriate in this instance. I also like the clarity and sharpness with a neutral gray background that will not take away from the subject. I rate this 5 stars all the way. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h⦠" width="35" height="17" alt="

Angrily gripping, grabbing and probing for the slightest hint of the dreaded fat. Finding any is torment. So is not finding any.

Could not watch tv only listen to it becaus I couldn't keep my eyes open in the light. Had to lay in complete darkness

I think what I like best about this photo is that you can't really tell the gender of the model. I've had two friends (one male, one female) who've suffered from anorexia and they'd gotten to the point where you pretty much couldn't see any difference between their bodies anymore.
I also find it incredibly pathetic that I look at this photo and realize that, on some degree, I want to look like that again.
π: 0 β©: 1
NikolasBrummer In reply to Ashdancer [2012-06-08 14:02:51 +0000 UTC]
I never thought about it from this perspective, especially because so many people talked about "the boy shown on this picture", and since I myself modeled for it, I always saw the boy. But now that you are saying this, it changes everything for me and it appears ... well, genderless to me. if that is a word.
and I know that feeling. but no. I think it's something we all have got to fight.

Ashdancer In reply to NikolasBrummer [2012-06-08 19:50:54 +0000 UTC]
Glad I could give you a new perspective. I have a lot of respect for you for taking this photo. (It's incredibly untrue and unfair when eating disorders are labeled as "girl's problems".)
Also, I sort of featured the photo here: [link] (If that's a problem, I'll take it down.)
