This is very well done.
After having several friends go through anorexia, and knowing 2 to die from it, this is a very real and scary subject. The clawing of the skin shows the anxiety and eagerness to lose more. The dark arms show the tan, which is a common thing to see - apparently, more calories are burnt when the body is warm, so anos will stay in the sun/wearing warm clothing in an effort to lose more.
I am very saddened by this, and intrigued too, as I often am by such horrible and sad subjects and images. Well done, this really is a wonderful picture which shows the reality of anorexia.

No worries.
It has been hard... but really, it just awakenes me to the reality of this world, and makes me strive to be better and to encourage others to be healthy.
It was very well done.

Yes yes you can be too thin. You can be so thin and under nourished you die. And how is that living? I'm ok with showing anorexia... IF IT IS IN THE PROPER CONTEXT. This is pro anorexia. The message accompanied with the image isn't long enough to be sarcastic, and as this is a public viewing location (not just for "mature" individuals) runs the high chance of someone seeing this and it being damaging. I'm confused how its a clever concept as well. Something similar has even been done on tv YEARS AGO. I'm sorry if my 7 years of art school didn't teach me how to accept negative media like this, but life experience has only made me more sensitive not less. I've loss people in my life because of this disorder.

Images like this, especially seen by someone in younger and less experienced times, would see this on the daily deviations page and think that this is the way you're supposed to be. This is what gets you popularity and adoration. I know this because I have been that girl. Maybe not that boy, but I have struggled with this idea my whole life and its only recently that there has been any serious consideration to how things are perceived.

Sorry for being a flamer. but I just felt like I had to say this.

oh and to state that clear, the sentence was sarcastic. I wouldn't dare to promote anorexia!

I really get where you are coming from, I do. But let me put it this way - art isn't something that should ... hide away an issue because it could maybe affect some minors in a way or because it could hurt someones feelings - art is expressive, art is free. This photo is pure provocation to me and so I feel accomplished by your reaction.

Towards originality, don't tell me cute kittens or beautiful women are original, because they are not. And that's what is considered "popular" on DeviantArt. Despite I know it has been done before, I was just interpretating the concept my own way.

And after all, people below the age of 12 aren't even allowed to be on this website.

SiTran, I don't mean to sound rude, but this image is meant to scare people away from anorexia, rather than make them go towards it. This is a very dark and almost surreal image. It aint no advertisement. The media is the one who promotes anorexia through the use of models that are meant to represent the ideal beautiful woman/girl by saying that if a girl looks like this skinny tall model she'll have a wonderful social life full of parties and friends. This image uses a man whose rib cage is showing and he's clawing at his own skin, showing the mental scars it leaves on a person and then artist's comment is just showing what is possible in the future of young woman/man that chooses to follow the advertisements.

one of my friends thinks she is overweight, and has threatened to become anorexic recently. i really thank you for putting up this picture, because maybe now she will see how scary this disease can be. i just want her to know that she is beautiful no matter what, and she shouldnt hurt herself in order to be skinny.

in addition to all that, the photo itself is just stunning. leaving out the face gives it an air of anonymousness. and having the model being male who is dealing with being anorexic (well, in your case your just skinny ) i hope opens peoples eyes that this is not a disease that just girls deal with. well done <3

If you're worried about your friend, there's a few sites on the internet which explain the dangers of this.
It includes organ dysfunction and later breakdown of organs, the stopping of a menstrual cycle (leading to later infertility), growth of coarse, dark hair on their arms, legs and stomach, constipation, sunken old-looking skin, and extreme hair loss.
Anorexia is a very real problem, and there's not enough awareness out there in how to help. The best thing you can do is be a friend, and love her through it.

Sorry if I over-stepped anything in this comment - but this is really important to me, and I want people to get better, not suffer and die like 2 of my friends.

I'll pray for your friend, and that you'll know what to say and for the right reasons.
God bless

To your comment...Oh yes you can be too thin. Having body issues can really work a number on your mind. I think we've all dealt with body issues with in thing or another.Things we don't like about ourselves. I have been fortunate enough in my life to not have been bitten by the anorexia bug. I have had the whole weight complex but not too a dire extreme. I like food, and it's sad to me that so many of us in well off countries choose to starve ourselves when we have food. We are actually able to be healthy by choice. Then, there are 3rd world countries that have people that can't eat because they have no food. They get sick and die from starvation....and not willingly. I just think this is where everything is backwards and screwed up in the world. Our fixations about image have thrown everything out of whack, and our priorities in life are screwed up. No offense meant. It's a great photograph. Very moving.

NikolasBrummer In reply to Dreaming-In-Hues [2011-08-27 14:57:11 +0000 UTC]

I just want to state that clear, the artist comment was ironic!

But overall, thank you a lot. I competely agree with your input, despite the fact I think anorexics actually can't choose to starve, it happens because they want to be perfect.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dreaming-In-Hues In reply to NikolasBrummer [2011-08-27 21:39:51 +0000 UTC]

ironic? I don't follow you. Do you mean sarcastic?

Well a lot of people want to be perfect, but I think there is no such thing when it comes to us humans. We are flawed, regardless, inside or out. I think that makes no sense either to say that "anorexics can't choose to starve, it happens because they want to be perfect". That sounds like a choice to me. They want to be perfect, so they starve themselves to be thin. Like I said, that's a choice.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NikolasBrummer In reply to Dreaming-In-Hues [2011-08-27 22:06:02 +0000 UTC]

oh yeah, meant ssarcastic, sorry.

No no, it's really not like that. They want to be thin so they start to not eat. And then they continue. And no matter what they do, how hard they try, they just won't stop to not eat. And that is not their choice.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dreaming-In-Hues In reply to NikolasBrummer [2011-08-28 05:13:45 +0000 UTC]

Ok, well, this is how I see it. They first made the choice to stop eating to become thin, then it got so bad...to the point they no longer had control over not eating. Like once they start on that path it's hard to come back from it. It's like any habit/behavior...once you start a habit or pattern of behavior ...it's hard to break or stop the habit. Some things are beyond our own control, but a person has control over whether they eat or not. I would say at least at the start of an eating disorder they do.
