Description I took some photos for *Sortvind 's contest ( [link] ) today, deadline is on Sunday, so expect some similar shots in the next days! Give me all advices and critique you have, I really want to win this contest!
I am still trying out different lightings & editings, this is my first attemp.

Quite surprised about the depth of field though.

The contest is not about creating an exact copy of the picture, I just thought some vintage colors would be nice!

Hmm...

It's quite similar to the other one, I have to say... I'm not too sure whether the lighting was the best here, as it falls a bit limp, if you get what I mean?

The colours are great in the way they complement each other, but it lacks that impact, I feel. It does seem to convey a sense of warmth and tenderness, but... eh.

Is it possible for you to use a shallower depth of field?

I like how you haven't laid the book flat, as that concept is overdone. However, maybe you can rotate this and crop it into a square... but if you want to stick to this concept, then I'd suggest a shallower depth of field and a more inspiring background, better lighting...and go lower too, angle it steeper, if that makes sense?

NikolasBrummer In reply to 3wyl [2011-04-15 19:17:14 +0000 UTC]

Yes yes, it is limp!

Thank you, El. I appreciate it.
But I can't have any more depth of field, unfortunately. :/

I used your advices, I'll submit the results today.

Aww, that sucks... you need to get yourself a 50mm 1.8!

Or 50mm 1.4, as I remember it. xD

I like the texture around the edges of the image --blurry, soft texture that is. Added by the earthly tone of the picture, it captures the idea of having a one-magical-Sunday-afternoon-while-reading-a-book vibe. (Hope it does make sense though). It portrays the opposite of a crisp image...like what your title is meaning to entail, there's a sense of tenderness.

Just-Something-Else [2011-04-15 00:14:06 +0000 UTC]

I love that you chose a book based on the key word "tenderness"

But I'm not sure if the effect where you can't see the words helps you there. If you found a passage that really speaks "tenderness" to you and managed to make that show in the photograph, maybe that will help you?

I'm not sure, I'm not a photographer

Good luck!

Thank you!

No, I guess that wouldn't really suit, because the book itself is german and I wanted to have a great depth of field.
but thanks! (:

I love how crisp the rims of the pages are, but what the words are blurred.

Well, I don't speak German at all and I speak English only a little, so, maybe you can read or translate with something my comment.
So, I will speak in French, I'm so sorry. But, if you want answer, you can write in English. C= Thank you.
J'aime beaucoup cette photographie. Particulièrement le fait qu'on ne voit pas les lettres, les mots,... Juste le bord des pages. C'est une image vraiment magnifique. Continue ainsi!

I'm so sorry for the French.

I really love this photograph. In particular the effect where you can't see the letters and the words,.. just the border of the pages. It's a truly magnificent image. Continue like this!

it's good, but that is all. I want to help so please don't be offended...ok?
First of all on picture that inspired you really shows magicness of the book. It's mysterious, deep and somehow magical. It makes you want to read that book because it looks really cool. And pay atention to the lighting, because that is what is making that picture magical. And on the other hand your picture does not make me want to read it. It is telling that you don't understand that book. It looks like you just took one book, took a picture of it and edited it. You need a better picture. That is my opinion

Thank you for this!
I guess you are right at some points, but just you to state that clear, my intention was to make a vintage photo with some tones fitting to the name 'tenderness', but I will try to make another photo with a lighting as it is on *Sortvind 's piece and let it look magical!
