There's probably no connection but what came first to my mind was E.A. Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart.

I think the spirit shape with the heart is the actual man (?) who had the ghosties happen to him, stepped forward and left his spirit and heart behind.
His spirit has a hand on his shoulder asking him not to go, but he is all changed, and has forgotten his other life. so walks away.

I haven't used a stock brush for a long time, I created all my usual brushes.
Sometimes I use a soft round, but even that is altered.

Feel free to ask me any questions but it's really just a matter of experimenting.
I save all my brushes as layers on one psd file, 1"x1" (600ppi). That way I can mix and match.
