Description
I did this profile sketch to begin the learning process for drawing G4 ponies. I used the head measurement, body measurements, and hair/eye pre-sketches that you can find in my gallery to do it and it seems to have worked well.I understand it's not perfect, but this took a significant amount of time and effort (though it got far easier the further I went). Now that I have a sense for the relative sizes and positions for everything, a head-on sketch will likely be next followed by 3/4 view.
Once those are all complete, I hope I ready to actually do some fan art (I have several ideas in mind already)

Thank you so much i have read your story/tutorial. I wasn't bad at drawing ponies but somehow it wasn't right, i'm following your steps atm first side then front view of all main six. This will help improve my drawing greatly thanks again!

It's definitely a good place to start. For a long time (and even now sometimes), it helps me to think about those proportions and connection points.

You have to start somewhere, even if somewhere is ugly. Believe me, find an excuse to draw and keep at it. See here: [link]

Ha! Definitely not. Consider that she was the inspiration for the show style, but didn't actually create show style so there would be some variance. And most importantly, she can draw anything her mind can imagine without guides or massive amounts of time and effort like me.
Someday I hope to be more like her

Maybe you should start with just the head. In my gallery under guides, there's just profile shots of their faces. All you need to do is draw a circle (I used a quarter to draw good circles, but you can use a jar top or anything else to make it bigger if that's easier).
Once you have a circle, you just need to add a few lines for things like ears, nose, eyes, etc.

Thanks for doing this, its so hard to get a pony to stand still enough for measurements.
Especially Pinkie when she gets a few expressos in her.
Looks great.

Considering my style... this will be a great help, thanks! They look far more amazing than anything I can come up with yet!
One question... do you plan on doing something like this to other (and maybe non-pony) characters?
π: 0 β©: 1
Nimaru In reply to JunaECBS [2011-06-30 00:41:32 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, not sure. Right now I plan to draw all the main six in profile, head on, then face shots (already through a few of the face shots). After that, the princesses and I have an idea for a comic, but that's going to be REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLY hard!
I might make an OC pony too. Hard to say. Did you see my profile drawing guide that I used for these? If you draw your own, that would be pretty helpful.

I am jelly of your shading ability with just a pencil.
I still haven't grasped the concept of guidelines yet. About the most I can do is draw three circles and then try to draw the rest of the pony from that, but I can't ever get the right proportions consistently. How did you get your circles so perfect?
π: 0 β©: 1
Nimaru In reply to Chromadancer [2011-06-29 14:07:45 +0000 UTC]
I traced a quarter. It makes it silly easy to do
And you're the second person to bring up the shading thing. I never thought of it as anything special.

I left most of the circles at least outlines so people could see that they really worked. The profile circle guides were a lot easier to use than the front ones though so I'm glad I did profiles first.

yeah. It's looks like a slightly worse copy of yours (with worse shading), but now I got the hang of it (I think).
Again: THANK YOU!
No longer must my poni suffer the humiliation of being horrendously mis-proportioned.

and as for getting the hang of it, that's the trick. Learning to draw the lines all curvy like they do was a lot harder than I thought it would be. Any practice you can get helps

Glad I could help
I think it was a pretty good effort with the only real need for change being her eye too small.
Use my closeup of the heads for a better idea of eye size and placement based on the lines:

Thanks so much! /)^3^(\
I don't know how I missed those the first time!
I wish I could free-hand better. I took me around two hours to draw that first one Β¬.Β¬;
I still can't draw wings. I'm going to have to try putting circles on stills from the show.
I just want to thank you again for these images.
/is that illustrator?

Nimaru In reply to kittyhawk-contrail [2011-06-05 10:41:29 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I used illustrator because you can't make circle outlines and lines very easily in PS.
As for the rest, I'm working my way up to freehanding and I mostly freehanded the Apple Bloom faces, but only after taking hours and hours to draw the others. Don't feel bad if it takes a while. It does for everyone at first I bet (except those pro types, but we all hate them right ?

Nimaru In reply to Mn27 [2011-04-15 15:02:51 +0000 UTC]
Yes. You can see the templates elsewhere in my gallery that I used to discover the correct proportions. Then I drew 5 circles per pony by tracing a quarter. I free-handed the rest.

I use a nickel. Or the top of a jug of milk. Depends on the size drawing I want I guess.
And if I've not spent my nickels buying soda already
