Ooh boy, something tells me I'm gonna get flamed for this.
I don't really like fanfics that involve OCs being the main character because, I usually like reading about the main characters. Now, I know that there are pretty good fanfics with OCs as the main character, but here is one of my biggest pet peeves with OCs in fanfics.
I don't like OC X canon characters. A good example is, I was surfing fanfiction.net for some good LotR fanfics, and I swear, I saw at least a hundred fanfics that share the same summary: a female OC gets sucked into middle earth and falls in love with Legolas. It's a very repetitive idea! Can't the writers imagine a better plotline other than an OC X Canon story?
But I don't really mind if you write these kinds of fanfic, so go right ahead; I'm not gonna stop you.
If tl;dr, OC X Canon fanfics can get repetitive.

I like oc/canon ships, but yeah. The ship plots can get a bit repetitive. Plus, mary sues and gary stus make that worse. If at some point I do write an oc/canon fic, I'm avoiding those plots like the plague.

I agree completely, I absolutely HATE OcxCanon because .... well- to me most of them are cliches "hey I'm a teenage girl" "I'm normal" "I have a dark secret" "I cut" "oh look,a hot guy" "lemme just make out" "oh look, he LOVES me!?" "But another guy loves me as well!111!" and it gets worse from there, not to mention the lack of LGBT characters- because fuck gay people right?- and the support from everyone BUT the other female character, which has had more character development then they're shitty OC's

This can be very true. I see so many OCxCannon fanfics that utterly ruin the cannon character or are just so repetitive and cliche that it makes me want to hit my head repeatedly against somethings hard.Β
I'm not against all OCxCannon pairings, I've read some good ones and I write them as well but I do my best not to ruin the character and my stories sure as heck aren't focused completely on romance because that irritates me.Β

That's all good, not everyone is going to be into OC/Canon so I respect your opinion - most of them ARE pretty bad. But didn't FF.net change filters/finally install filters to avoid having to see tons of OC/Canon stuff?
I'm grateful for that. Back in 2005-6, I remember having to wades through pages and pages of it.

Yeah they do get old very fast -.- but there are some well created stories with canon x OC some stories have canon x Oc but it isn't the main plot\_(._.)_/ *shrugs* I'm absolutely fine with Oc x canon based stories but again they can get boring and some sent even well constructed...I agree with ya on that point you have there

While I do plan on writing a Link X OC fanfic sometime in the near future, I personally prefer if the canon character is the main character and the original one is just secondary.

It's just a fantasy, nothing more, it's completely harmless.

I just hate those generic, repetitive OCs with no personality whatsoever and immediately, the canon character instantly falls in love with them as soon as they see them. That happens a lot in self-insert fics to.
self inserts are okay, too, but not when they're taken to the extremes. xD

exactly! it's like, make it interesting or something at least! that's the repetitive thing about canon x oc.
( hahaha in most of my fanfics my oc will fall in love with a character and it'd be so OOC for the canon character to like them back, so they have to humorously try to get their attention hahaha

Canon X OC can work sometimes. It usually doesn't. I've seen too many Zelda fanfics that are about the author some human getting sucked into the writer's game of choice and falling in love with Link.
