Description
The only good thing to come from Maggie Thatcher is great satire, particularly the one that allows Rik Mayall to be sexyAquarell pencils and charcoal pencil, small format.

Thanks, I was originally going to do more of them (It's done in no time when you're working with such a small scale.) with different techniques and colour schemes, but then I got distracted ...

Yes; The sexy Bastard; B'stard. It blows my mind that seems light years away from the Young Ones, but really didn't that start around '89? The New Statesman? That was such a fun show!

Yes, I mean bloody hell. It also runs parallel with Bottom for a couple o' years, which is crazy! Rik is just so RIK in most of in his roles, yet there is SUCH a range! Alan and Richie are from completely different worlds, it's so odd to think they co existed and that Rik could just wake up one day and go be sly sexy rich Alan and then be a pathetic sweaty git the next day ...

Yeah; I recall thinking at the time, "This is the same Rik who was doing the "spotty" Rik (the people's poet) & yet so different.."
He seems more grown up as Alan B'stard & I suppose that really does speak of his range... I have been listening to "Absolute Power" with Stephen Fry & there are some similar elements to The New Statesman...

I noticed that as well. Cor, I have a yearning for satire! I also really liked the party party with Hugh, that was more on the silly side though. Post.modernism to the extreme. I find that sort of stuff interesting though, even when it doesn't work the post-modernism nerd in me screams with delight even when my inner critic doesn't.

I hadn't heard The Party party yet! But, I know what you mean, I seem to at the very least be interested in the satires of that era if not enjoying them out right... I was hearing Stephen Fry say "Maggie Thatcher made everyone suffer & the public kept coming back for more".. Well, they were trying to put a spin on the church of England & do a re-launch. They decided to play up the sin angle! Fry's character becomes a total turn coat when it comes to money! How can he stay so sophisticated & yet so bent at the same time?!

Haha, great pun. I sort of pity comedians when Maggie left, the new statesman was in a crises, Spitting image had no idea what to do. I man really John Major! It's like they purposefully set about finding someone that it would be difficult to satirise! Comicstrip dide a good job at it thoug, I really like "Red Nose of Courage" And then there was Blair ... hehehe
You seen "Believe Nothing" attempt at a revival of the New Statesman, really doesn't work. Lack of sex apparel and lack of satire killed it.

You're right; there is a special place in my mind for that time! It was rich pickings for satire & parody! Then...nothing, really! Sort of like Bill Clinton & all his sexual antics were a total disgrace, really, but people seemed to still like him~! The Busch/Empire of Evil would change things for ever & not for the good in my mind, but when I look back on those pre 9/11 days, everyone was making money & things were much more fun. All the comedians had loads of material about "Wild" Bill & his "sexcapades".
I have not heard of "Believe Nothing" before, but I did "follow" you on You Tube as you seem to find all these wonderful half-forgotten goodies!

9/11 ... what a cock-up ... politicians are sometimes so stupid and evil and off mark that it's hard to make comedy that heightens it even more. The absurd thing is that I can't really imagine that they don't mean well ...
ON YOUTUBE! .... I mean on YouTube, that's fine.... *frantically checks what the hell I've got on there* I always forget that all my lists are public ... I just add things to lists to keep track of what I've seen and not ... and then I add my own sort of private, but I realize totally not private notes to remember the contents of videos. *Scrolling trough stuff* wow there is lots of crap here that I can't even remember having heard of, but hey I can track past obsessions I guess ... I somehow feel I have done you wrong by these. The Stephen and Rik ones are in good order though. How did you even think about going to my youtube?

You got it! I could sum it up better myself... I have a strange feeling that even the presidential elections are pre-arranged (ordained) way ahead of time & electoral college voting is a mere formality!! There is a quote that I love... let's see; how dose it go: Democracy is our having the right to the freedoms to as we want; Just so long as we do as we are told... Something like that..:[
Oh don't worry, Special K~! (me not judgemental) Ha -- you had the link to the Ade clip from the TV movie & I saw you left a comment; So I did not scroll through your "like" list or anything...I just clicked "subscribe" & left... I tend to avoid youtube, as I wind up spending WAY too much time watching things & feel guilt about time wasting.. I know you ferret out some obscure British stuff, I've not even heard of... and Oh By the way, I just discovered another radio play done by Rik in 2009; I have yet to find a recording of it, but the title is; "I Tell You, It's Burt Reynolds" a comedy one-off play by Galton & Simpson with the legendary June Whitfield co-starring... sounds good to me.. No, don't worry, I am not stalking you, I promise, I am too lazy..lol... Oh yes, I want to send you "Saturday Night Fry" & I sent you an MP3 some time ago of a Young Ones track... Did you get it? Did it work? I sent it via email... & wondered.. I have a soundcloud page & I have posted Rik Mayall 's final & unfinished radio show,"The Last Hurrah: Interview with A Snowman".
& the first 2 episodes of Benedict Cumberbatch's Young Rumpole of The Old Bailey... almost as flip as Sherlock! (Those you can download & hear offline if you like)

1. "Special K" is a bloody awesome nickname!
2. /everything else:
Don't know that I'd go as far as to say the elections are pre planned. But I don't think the interesting bit is whether or not they are, but the fact that people feel like they might as well be. That is not a good thing, I don't think it's the answer to what's wrong, but rather a symptom of the illness it's trying to describe ... if you get my meaning. One thing I certain however. In my mind, the US haven't got much more right to call them selves a democracy that the Democratic Republic of Congo. Two parties?! Are you kidding me! UK's not really democratic either (First past the post my arse! ). Now depending on your definition I'd say Norway's democratic. We are a relatively well functioning representative democracy at least. In Norway, we have something like 6 parties with a serious impact on what's going on and their representation is proportional to their support amongst the people. About 80 percent of Norwegians vote and we feel like out votes count to a much larger degree than people of, say ... the UK, do. It's not perfect, politicians don't necessarily manage to do what they planned, but hey, that's just how it is.
That's all right, I didn't think you were stalking me
I use YouTube A LOT! But not aimlessly, I subscribe to everything I'm interested in (so I rarely browse), which is mostly absurdly educational stuff ... so it doesn't feel like wasting time.
"The Last Hurrah" ... I feel some dripping Irony in that title ... last and unfinished. Have you seen that great pic floating 'round of the script for that show? GOD I wish one could share pictures on this site! It'd be bloody useful for sharing reference pictures and alike.
Please update me if you find "I Tell You, It's Burt Reynolds" I just love hearing Rik's voice, he has such an amazing way of making you feel like he is next to you whispering in you ear. His good night stories in particular are mesmerising!
I can't seem to find you'r email, but I don't remember encountering any problems with any of the files.
Now I'm off to stalk you on soundcloud
