kinda romantic, eh?, well, their relationship is very hinted toward that (almost)level (though a bit one-side ), Anyway here's the original illustration ! from the book!

This is such a beautiful portrayal of that scene. Right away I knew which part of the story it was based on.
And just like you, I do think this relationship was hinted at as being kinda one-sided romantic from Moomin's perspective. I personally feel that Snufkin is implied as asexual, but Moomin definitely seems to have those sort of feelings for him.

sometimes i think about how Moomin's life start to get a bit melancholy because of Snufkin coming into his life, you know, wherever there is love, there is also sadness..
