Description
Twice upon a lunar year, when the shadows grow their longest, the Sheikah, guardians of the dead, light their lanterns and play their instruments,
Beckoning to the lost souls and spirits wandering aimlessly throughout Hyrule,
Offering them solace in eternal slumber, 'else be confined to the darkness they so desperately cling to.
My entry for 's calendar contest themed "Zelda Music Festival". After much brainstorming and art block, I was able to settle on this concept. It goes something like this:
Twice a year in correlation with the seasons, the Sheikah hold the Shadow Soulstice: a festival in which they light poe lanterns and play instruments to draw the attention of the spirits wandering throughout Hyrule. They hold a procession throughout the land, playing the Song of Healing, offering the lost souls a chance at peace. The procession eventually leads back to their village of Kakariko, where any remaining evil spirits or those that refuse to rest are lured into the Bottom of the Well. While it might be considered a rather somber event, I imagine the Sheikah would take great joy in it (hence why the Sheikah woman and the green poe spirit are smiling at each other).
A couple other things I want to mention about the artwork: the Well represents the pupil in the Eye of Truth symbol, perhaps to signify how the Sheikah perceive the world of the restless spirits around them. Restless or evil souls (colored blue as a little tribute to Twilight Princess) who cannot heal enter the well. You might wonder what happens to them down there, but think about it: there's a Green Bubble down in the bottom of the well. Ever wonder why the skull of a Bubble is flaming, or why in Zelda games they seem "possessed", can spring to life suddenly, and even curse you? ...Well, now you know! I think that sounds rather like a restless spirit, don't you? The lyre is also based off Sheik's lyre and the male Sheikah wears the symbol of the Sage of Shadow/Shadow Temple. The three Sheikah in the background wear the Mask of Truth.
But that aside, I spent a lot of time on this artwork, so I hope it shows! I learned a lot from it.
Enjoy!

(Oh my goodness I feel so awkward asking this...)
This is a wonderful idea! I've been working on an Ocarina of Time fan fiction for a while, could I borrow the concept please?
Where credit is due, it will be given.

I feel even more awkward for the fact I am replying months late. I do believe that should negate any form of awkward on your end. But if the question is still applicable, you're welcome to borrow the concept~

This is a really cool concept! The three poe lanterns are placed nicely, as if lined up with the eyebrows of the Sheikah symbol. I'm also intrigued that all the green poes are smiling, and all the purple ones are frowning...
As a musician, I can give one critique, in case you decide to do something similar in the future. Look at the flute. You have the holes nicely spaced. But do you see how far the holes near the mouth are to the closest hand? He wouldn't be able to cover them, and would lose at least half his range. Plus, it looks like the middle two fingers on his right hand aren't even by holes... Realistically, the hands should be evenly spaced along the length of the flute. That, and the flute should be tilted up towards the mouth a little more. The mouth-hole should be in line with the space between his lips.
I know those are really picky critiques, but if you do decide to do any more art with a flutist, I hope you will remember them. They will help you produce a much more realistic piece. That's not to say that this looks bad; quite the contrary. I just wanted to give you a bit of advice to further improve your skills.

Hey, thanks for the feedback (the details are great and you managed to remain positive, thanks!). I agree, could definitely use improvement, and of course I will keep it in mind if I ever do art of a flutist again.
The green poes are all smiling and the purple ones frowning based directly off the poe models from Ocarina of Time. As to why they were always that way, I have no idea. I think it lends thought to their intriguing nature, though.

Very cool. They remind me of Link and Zelda (intentional? ) and I like how the female is playing what seems to me as the Goddess Harp or maybe it's just a visual immitation

Thank you. And yes, the Link and Zelda similarities were slightly intentional. The Goddess Harp was also very much on purpose, as in this picture, it was thought of as an heirloom passed down among the Sheikah. (Though the design varied from the SS version due to not really seeing much of the SS version of the harp at the time, but also slightly elaborated from the OoT version by adding the ribbons as a ceremonial/version thing.)

This is such a cool idea....I love that you did something for the Sheikah, and the premise behind this is cool.....if this one were chosen for the calendar, it would be great for October, it's kind of Halloweeny

Wow! That's so creative! Maybe you could add the moon for the "lunar" effect.
I love the Shiekah so much and you basically portrayed my vision of them here. I'm like " HOLY CRAP."

Thanks! Though I can't add the moon, because there's no sky in the background. That's why the lighting is blue-ish, it's supposed to be moon lighting.

Wow, wow, WOW!
This has to be one of your best works yet. <3
I absolutely ADORE all the details you have put on this draw.
It really shows all the hard work put it in.
Beautiful designs on the Sheikah's and on the setting itself.
The Poes and their lights reflected everywhere gives it a very spiritual feeling to it.
Incredible concept and elements as well, I truly adored this!
Much of luck in the Contest!
Also this needs more love!
Time to request it in Groups if you don't mind.

This is a beautiful entry! I love how you color, and I love the idea you incorporated into this! The whole well thing is really awesome!
I love the way you do hair, and the Sheikah eye on the girl's forehead, and the harp, and the ominous Sheikahs wearing the masks in the back. I also love the fact that you incorporated all those colors in. Very pretty. <3

You've truly done a wonderful job with this! It's simply gorgeous, I love how you cleverly included so many references from the game elements yet created a totally new concept!
The characters are beautiful, and this is probably one of my favourite pieces from you when it comes to colouring! Everything is in perfect harmony, the textures you created are so pleasing for the eyes and the way you "tamed" all the different light sources in the making of the shadings is fabulous!
The lines are precise and it's clear to see how patient you were to keep every element looking as perfect as possible!
I wish you the best of lucks for this contest!

Very true! Sometimes we just feel like rushing our pictures in our desire to see the final product and then it isn't quite what we expected due to the fact we didn't take a little more time to make things better!

My eyes love this image so much. There are eerie lights and details everywhere! The time you spent on this DEFINITELY shows, I'm amazed!
The Poe spirits and background behind this truly suit the spooky theme. I could totally see this representing October!
I feel you should get something for the concept alone, because it's just so clever! <3
