Description
Our Founding Fathers did NOT give us a democracy. In fact, they hated democracies. Democracies are among the worst forms of government in existence, because it is "rule by majority." In a democracy, 51% of the people control the other 49%. They truly are "two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner."Our Founding Fathers gave us a Constitutional Republic, which is "rule by law." You have your unalienable (unchangeable) rights, and no one and nothing can take them from you--not the government, not the banks, not the corporations, not the majority... NO ONE!!! That's what the United States was designed to be. Sadly, that is not what it is today.

Well put. I recall having this argument with my high school history teacher--in class, no less. He kept saying that America was a democracy, and I kept saying, "Nope. Try again." Part of me was just being a smart ass--nobody really liked him--but the other part was me wanting to show him what the founding fathers had in vision for the USA. It is NOT a democracy, it IS a republic. I invited my teacher to go to a library and see for himself. Which he took as a challenge. The following Monday, he came in and actually apologized to the class for hie error. But boy, did he ever hate me for this. Like I cared--I was a senior at the time, and already had enough credits to graduate.

the problems with american democracy is that it is run on a first-past-the-post system which, by nature, always ends up with 2 large parties. if democracy abbandoned FPTP in favor of party-list-proportional-representation you get multiple parties, a parliament/congress that more accurately represents the people's voting habbits (in the uk where I live the conservative party have 331/650 of the seats in parliament but only 39% of the vote) and you will also end up with coalition governments in which the country is ruled by 2 or more parties. the problem is NOT democracy, the problem is FPTP

Great poster, we covered this in Constitutional Law 2 terms back, John Locke in his "Two Treatises on Government" made the point that people are free by the law not from it.Β No one is supposed to be above or outside the law not individuals and not govt.s

Agreed! I believe it was John Adams who said they were seeking to establish "a government of laws and not of men."
